Body sherd of colour coated ware vessel with barbotine decoration. The fabric is pale grey/buff with sparse large quartz inclusions (less than 5%); the slip coating is a dark grey brown. The barbotine decoration was done onto the wheel thrown vessel before it was coated in slip. The body sherd is curved and could be form an open vessel such as a bowl or a closed vessel such as a beaker. It is probably Colchester ware but could be one of the varients of Nene Valley ware and could date from 125 AD to 400 AD. It is 31.3mm long, 26.1mm wide, 4.8mm thick and weighs 5.62 grams.

Body sherd of a Samian ware vessel with raised decoration. The Samian is probably a Central Gaulish type of late 1st to early 2nd century and the curve of the sherd suggests it belows to an open vessel such as a bowl. It is decorated with a fine dark orange slip and the fabric is mid orange. The decoration consits of plain and beaded lines and part of an animal, possible a lion. The decoration was formed by throwing the vessel on a wheel into a decorated mould. The fragment is 28.5mm long, 27.9mm wide, 6.3mm thick and weighs 6.16 grams. Some of the breaks are fresh while others show …

Cast copper alloy end cap from a wooden staff or pole. The cap is cylindrical with one end closed by a flat cap and one open. 50% of the rim of the open end is lost to old breaks. Near the open end, on opposite sides, are two round holes, presumably to hold rivets which would rivet the cap onto a woodern pole; one is incomplete due to old breaks. Half way between the holes is a loop which projects from the side of the cylinder; it is roughly rectangular with rounded corners and 10.5mm long by 7.6mm wide by 3.5mm thick. Opposite this loop the edge is broken but the area below the break …

Medieval cast copper alloy zoomorphic ewer spout. The spout dates from the 15th to 17th centuries, and is likely to be of Flemish or German origin. Ewer spouts of this date were made separately to the body of the ewer, to which they were then welded (Lewis, 1987- see reference below). The front of the spout is in the form of an animal’s head with two oval raised ears and two eyes and a snout. A pipe extends from the animal’s open mouth, through which liquid would have flowed. The rear of the spout is undecorated and slopes downwards to form a large curved opening, which is where it…

An incomplete cast copper alloy zoomorphic candleholder, in the form of a dog. The dog is missing his hind legs. The head is at 90° to the legs and has two ears comprised of a triangle with a V-shaped cut at the top. There appears to be grooves around the snout. The dog is wearing a collar. The body of the dog survives, complete with a tail. There is a hole drilled through the centre of the animal's body, suggesting this would have been where the socket was inserted. Other zoomorphic candleholders of similar form are usually standing on a base - the slim foot we see here would have e…

An incomplete copper alloy mirror case of medieval date. One half of the case survives; the remainder is missing due to old breaks. It consists of a convex cast disc that is circular in shape with a flat exterior surface and a hollow or concave interior. On one side of the disc are the remains of a pair of integral pin lugs that would have enabled the case to hinge. On the opposing side is an incomplete single integral lug that projects outwards, this would have acted as a catch to keep the two sides of the case together. The interior of the disc is missing the mirror. The exterior su…
