A copper alloy rotating strap clasp of Medieval date. It is rectangular in section and trapezoidal in plan tapering slightly towards the plate end. There is an offset and narrowed rectangular bar at the inner end from which the now missing plate would once have hinged. The opposite, exterior end has a circular bar that holds in place the rotating end. This is flat, rectangular in section and has the remains of a transverse bar mount, which is now missing due to old breaks. The rotating end has suffered from wear and corrosion that leaves it firmly fused to the frame of the clasp. This …

Broad period: IRON AGE
County: York
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy fragment of an Iron Age torc. This type of torc is a common find in Scotland, but much rarer in Yorkshire – although examples are known. All that survives of the torc are four ribbed beads, all cast together. They are heavily pitted and corroded, as are the breaks at either end. The reverse is flatter and smoother, while the front is ribbed. It is not clear exactly how many ribbed would have made up the torc. On the reverse of one of the beads there is a back to front L-shaped aperture, this may have been used to hold the beads to the rest of the necklace. A si…

Cast copper-alloy sub-rectangular shoe buckle, c.1690-1720. The frame has bevelled inner edges, but is otherwise undecorated. It has two drilled holes through the centre of each of the longer sides to hold a seperate spindle. This spindle, along with the pin, stud chape and tongue remain in situ. The spindle appears to be iron, which has become badly corroded. The buckle frame is greenish-brown and survives in good condition. The pin, stud chape and tongue are slightly lighter green-brown in colour and show greater signs of errosion. Similar to Whitehead, p.102, no.660. Length: 44.3…

Object type: HARNESS FITTING
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: York
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy ring, possibly Iron Age to Roman in date, of uncertain function. It is possibly that this ring was used on carts or chariots, as it resembles other Iron Age fittings. It is formed from a circular loop, with a circular section. There is an integrally cast bezel-like fitting. It sits proud of the ring and has a circular face, which is indented, but it is not clear why. The metal is a mid greyish-green colour and it is pitted. The colour and feel of the metal are reminiscent of other Iron Age to early Roman metalwork found in the area.
