A gold finger ring of Medieval date. It has a simple undecorated wire hoop that expands at the shoulders and opposite the bezel narrows, perhaps partly due to use wear. The hoop is slightly misshapen and this appears to also be the result of usage rather than post-depositional damage. At the junction of hoop and bezel are prominent transverse rectangular ridges. The bezel itself is sub-rectangular in plan with two long tapering sides that have a short straight side at the base end and a wider, curved top end. In profile the bezel is sub-lozenge shaped with flattened base and top. The …

A silver openwork object, probably a bead or spacer, of Medieval or Post-Medieval date. It is made from a single sheet of silver that is rectangular in section and has been curved around to form a hollow cylinder with a seam visible on one side. At the top and bottom of the cylinder are solid borders between which are found the openwork decorative motifs. These consist of short triangles that extend from top and bottom borders and terminate in two small circular knops. They are joined together by a small circular pellet. This motif is repeated a total of five times around the cylinder…

A silver gilt finger ring of Medieval to Post-Medieval date. The ring consists of a flat hoop that is rectangular in section. On the exterior surface the band is decorated with a central cabled pattern that may once have run the entire circumference of the hoop although this is now uncertain due to extensive wear on the hoop opposite the bezel. Where the hoop joins the bezel is a sharply angled raised transverse ridge. The bezel itself is rectangular in plan with rounded edges, is sub-trapezoidal in profile and has a central rectangular recess that is now missing any trace of the gems…

An incomplete cast silver pilgrim badge of Medieval date. The badge is flat and in the form of a Lombardic letter T. The upper surface is smooth and has extensive scratches and striations that are probably the result of both production and subsequent wear. The exterior and interior edges of the badge are slightly uneven and crudely formed in places with visible tool marks, particularly on the interior. The back face of the badge has been left unevenly finished, pitted and lacks the smooth surface apparent on the front face. Visible on the back face are the remains of two small integra…

Object type: INGOT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk

A solid cast silver ingot of possible Early Medieval/Viking date. The ingot is oval in shape with rounded terminal ends. The upper and lower faces have been flattened and the edges are slightly faceted to give an almost pointed oval shaped section. The surfaces are slightly pitted and blackened in places and many horizontal striations are visible, perhaps the result of the production process or alternatively due to post-depositional damage. This ingot measures 23.05mm in length, 9.80mm in width, 5.40mm in thickness, and weighs 7.46g. Several simple cast silver ingots such a…
