A copper-alloy lid from a medieval cased mirror. Three very similar lids were found in excavations in London (see Egan and Pritchard, 1991, p. 361-2, nos. 1714, 1715 and 1716). The dating of the London examples suggests that this robust form of mirror case was probably introduced in the late 14th century (p. 365). The lid takes the form of a cast circular disc with a rim which angles vertically downwards from the upper surface, creating a recessed underside. Protruding from the edges of the case, set opposite each other, are a single pierced lug, and a pair of lugs (one damaged) with …

A worked flint artefact which is probably a chipped axe or adze of late Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. A parallel for this piece was found at Glenarm, Antrim, and was dated to the 6th millenium to 4th millenium BC (Megaw & Simpson, 1979). The implement is unusual in that it is curved towards the narrow end. It seems unlikely, however, that this feature would have affected the performance of the tool, since the back of the axe would have not been used for chopping. The tool is roughly drop-shaped in plan, with slightly convex long sides and a rounded blade. It is thickest toward…

An incomplete copper-alloy brooch of late Iron Age to early Roman date. This artefact would appear to be a la Tène III type brooch, which is of suggested mid 1st century BC to late 1st century AD date (see Hattatt, 1982, p. 57). The brooch has been made in one piece, from a strip of copper-alloy. The widest point of the bow is about one third of the way down. From here, the sides taper gradually to the point where the brooch is broken, just above the foot. The width of the brooch also tapers upwards, towards the head. This latter element has been formed by bending the copper-alloy …
