Object type: BUTTON AND LOOP FASTENER
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy button and loop fastener of Roman date. The head has a flat back and is slightly convex in profile. The shape of the head is uncertain as its edges are extremely worn and in some cases missing. It is possible that the head was once circular, although the edge nearest the loop seems to be relatively straight and thus possibly indicating a square shape. The head is decorated with a central cross with thick diagonal bands at the edge of each quadrant creating a lozenge shaped central motif. The recessed areas between the cross and diagonal bands may once ha…

Cast copper alloy harness fitting of Medieval date (1250-1400). The fitting is incomplete and composite; being formed from several conjoined elements. Broadly the fitting is irregular in both plan and cross section. It measures 59.2mm length, 40.7mm width, is 22.2mm thick and weighs 30.14 grams. The fitting is formed from multiple parts of which three conjoined elements survive. It seems likely that all three parts would have moved being held by a central spindle. This spindle is formed from a copper alloy decorative bar which expands from a relatively regular faceted shaft to a circu…

Cast lead alloy figurine of probable post medieval date 1600-1800. The figure is cast in one piece and is relatively crude in both shape and design. It is broadly sub-rectangular in shape, expanding along its length. In cross section it is broadly D shape with the reverse being flat and undecorated and the sides being bevelled.
