A Post Medieval lead alloy circular uniface token. One face is decorated with a cross-hatched pattern. Powell type 7. Leaden tokens were used for a variety of purposes. These ranged from small change, to checks and tallies for services rendered such as hop picking. They were in use from the Medieval period into late Post-Medieval. A number of designs exist that were produced centrally and circulated nationally, but since lead is so easy to fabricate by far the majority were made by local artisans and were used extensively in more provincial and rural communities. Accordingly ther…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy discoidal of uncertain function and date. Both faces are slightly convex. In cross-section it is lozengiform with truncated sides. There is a regular central depression on both faces. Above this is a perforation, rectangular in shape with rounded end (L.: 5.0mm). The dating of this object is difficult, although it bears a certain similarity to an artefact illustrated in Read (2001, 63; ref. 488) and described as an impractical 'terret-like object'. This suggests a date in the Iron Age or Roman periods. However, an earlier date cannot be ruled out; neither can …

TREASURE CASE : 2008 T531. 75 Roman Silver, 10 Roman Bronze coins and a pot sherd All of the coins were found within an area of 30 x 30 yards; some coins were on the surface with others at a maximum depth of nine inches. Also discovered was a whitish-grey sherd (wt. 36.96g) from the base of a small jar, which had probably once been the container for the coins. (Pots associated with coin hoards are usually buried upright - once smashed by plough activity the base of the pot stands the best chance of survival.) The coins were issued by the following Roman emperors (groupe…
