Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete cast pewter openwork mount with moulded raised rectangles in a single row within raised linear borders on the central element. The sides are bowed and just have two raised ribs, and one is broken in half along with the piece of the base that it would have attached to. The remaining piece of the base, which is at right angles to the central element, has recessed rectangles in a linear row, within its borders.
It is so regular in some of the rectangles that it must be post-medieval in date (Geoff Egan, pers comm). With identical decoration on both faces it must have been m…

Object type: GAMING PIECE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lead alloy cast plano convex lead disc, probably a gaming piece or token. On the convex surface it is crudely impressed with a cross motif which extends fully across the face. The design of such pieces followed no established styles and since lead is easy to fabricate could often follow the whim of a local artisan. Therefore, unless there is additional context or other association such pieces can only be given a wide date range; as such circa 1250-1750 is suggested for this example. Dimensions: diameter 16.32mm; thickness 5.33mm; weight 9.74g
