Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Fragment of a copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas's Class B, Type 5. Only the lower half survives, and the break is an irregular tear across the centre which has resulted in the loss of the attachment end and the rivets. The surviving part is filled with a single field of interlace in deep counter-relief. It tapers to the slightly raised terminal, which is in the form of an animal's head. The head is neatly modelled, with deep relief ears, pointed-oval eyes, and a nose formed from a double moulding. The reverse is flat and undecorated, apart from an incised faint line around the outer ed…

Fragment of a copper-alloy strap-end. Only the lower half survives; the break is an irregular tear across the centre, which has resulted in the loss of the attachment end and the rivets. The strap-end has a single field of decoration filled with a rather crude interlace design in counter-relief within an undecorated border. It tapers to a slightly raised knop which is collared and pointed. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The metal is a mid reddish-green colour; it is pitted and slightly corroded. This strap end does not fit particularly comfortably into Thomas's classificati…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Viking-age weight made from copper alloy with an iron core. The weight is roughly globular, with some flattened facets. One of the flattened facets is decorated with a ring made up of small stamped circles. Inside the ring is a swastika motif, but part of the motif has worn away revealing the brassy colouring of the metal. Opposite this there is a large lump of cracked and damaged copper alloy. On either side of the weight there are two further areas of damage and/or corrosion of the core. The metal is a dark reddish-brown colour. This type of 'truncated sphere' weight is one of the …

Object type: ROTARY QUERN
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An almost complete set (three larger and possibly two smaller fragments) of a rotary quern for grinding grain to create flour, probably dating from the Roman period, i.e. AD43-410, although similar household rotary querns were in use until the 19th century. Earlier examples of similar shape (called 'beehive querns', see examples in Ingle 1993/4, 21-33.) were also in use in the later pre-Roman Iron Age, but a Roman date is the most likely one for this rotary quern. Two of the images show the complete lower half on the right and half of the upper part on the left; the smaller fragments m…
