A re-touched flint flake tool of probable Neolithic or Bronze Age date.
At the proximal end, the flake retains a portion of the flat core platform. One of the vertical edges is straight, whilst the other is convex and irregular. The dorsal surface exhibits rippling and two vertical flake removal scars; the ventral surface has a clear bulb-of-percussion and rippling. There is one small area of abrupt re-touch on the convex edge, near to the distal end. The vertical edge also has a small area of abrupt re-touch. The flint is a transluscent orangey-brown colour.
The tool measures 37…

Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A worn base sherd from a Roman greyware strainer, probably specifically a colander. The fabric is light grey-brown with some micaceous inclusions. On the upper surface there is an angled zone at around forty-five degrees presumably where the body and base met. The base of the vessel features a number of perforations for straining arranged in fairly neat rows. The sherd has an irregular, roughly four-sided shape. The greyware probably has an Alice Holt/Farnham kiln provenance.

Treasure number 2008 T447 Roman coin hoard
Roman silver coin: clipped Siliqua of Arcadius, minted in Trier dating 388-95AD, Reece period 20. Reverse type VIRTVS ROMANORVM. RIC IX p33 no 106b.
Report by Jude Plouviez and Sam Moorhead
Discussion 3 late Roman silver coins were found in close proximity in the plough soil. Although 175 other Roman coins were also found in the area (being recorded onto the Portable Antiquities Database), it seems that that these silver coins come from the same group. They date from 355 to 395; only 7 copper alloy coins amongst the oth…

Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead-alloy token probably dating from the late medieval, post-medieval or early modern period. It is very worn on both obverse and reverse, but seems to have had a capital letter on one side and a spider's-web decoration on the other side. Lead-alloy tokens like this one are extremely common and very difficult to date unless they have a company's name or a value printed on their faces. However, they are usually considered to date from c. 1600-1900 when they were used as mining tokens or factory shops where employees could exchange them for goods or labour.

Broad period: BRONZE AGE

A slightly worn body sherd of prehistoric date, probably from a Middle Bronze Age urn. The sherd is irregular, but roughly four sided. The clay has been tempered abundantly with quite fine flint. The external surface has become oxidised to a mid-light orange colour which contrasts with the black of the internal face which is also the colour of most of the profile. As the fragment is fairly undiagnostic the date and original vessel form remain tentative.

Cast copper alloy pin, surviving in two fragments, dating from the Middle Iron Age, that is c. 500-200BC. The stem is complete and shows a swan's neck kick at the top; the break is old. The head is very ornate. It is wheel-shaped with moulded decoration. Between the head and the shaft sits a bulbous neck moulding between two narrow collars. The head is shaped like a wheel with four spokes and seventeen mouldings on the top: twelve around the wheel, like the hours of a clock, one on each spoke and a central one. There is no additional enamel decoration. Pins like these are probably rel…

Cast cu-alloy folded needle case or needle holder cap dating from the medieval ages, i.e. c. 14th century. The cap is small and of simple construction: a rectangular piece of sheet metal was folded over four times around its long axis with the last two folds (out of five) overlapping to form a case. Along the top of the rectangular sheet, there would be at two intervals (to coincide with the second and fourth side of the final folded case) a small extra square of metal which would then be folded over one another to form a simple cap. Before folding, the cap had been decorated with a si…

17th century copper alloy complete spur frame, missing its rowel. The remains of an iron loop is in situ in one of the figure-of-eight terminals. This would have formed part of a strap fitting by which means attachment of the spur was secured.
The arms of the frame are an elongtaed triangle in cross-section, being flat on the inside surface. From the centre a rather short neck projects from a six-sided moulding. The rowel box is angled sharply downwards and each 'arm' ends in a rounded, pierced terminal flanked on either side with a short horizontal moulding.
The spur measures c.…
