Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast cu-alloy finger ring probably dating from the later medieval or post-medieval period. The ring is plane and very worn, its hoop circular and the bezel only an expansion of the hoop. If there was an engraving or some other kind of decoration on the bezel, it has worn off. On the inside of the bezel, however, remains a small stamp which is still fairly visible: it is a small arrow complete with arrowhead and feathers with some lettering (?) or other decoration across the shaft. It could probably be the maker's mark.

Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead-alloy token probably dating from the late medieval, post-medieval or early modern period. It is very worn on both obverse and reverse, but seems to have had a capital letter on one side and a spider's-web decoration on the other side. Lead-alloy tokens like this one are extremely common and very difficult to date unless they have a company's name or a value printed on their faces. However, they are usually considered to date from c. 1600-1900 when they were used as mining tokens or factory shops where employees could exchange them for goods or labour.

Cast cu-alloy comb-shaped object which was part of a surveyor's chain indicating a yard every five chain links. Cast copper alloy pin, surviving in two fragments, dating from the Middle Iron Age, that is c. 500-200BC. The stem is complete and shows a swan's neck kick at the top; the break is old. The head is very ornate. It is wheel-shaped with moulded decoration. Between the head and the shaft sits a bulbous neck moulding between two narrow collars. The head is shaped like a wheel with four spokes and seventeen mouldings on the top: twelve around the wheel, like the hours of a clock, one on each spoke and a central one. There is no additional enamel decoration. Pins like these are probably rel…

Object type: NEEDLE HOLDER
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Denbighshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast cu-alloy folded needle case or needle holder cap dating from the medieval ages, i.e. c. 14th century. The cap is small and of simple construction: a rectangular piece of sheet metal was folded over four times around its long axis with the last two folds (out of five) overlapping to form a case. Along the top of the rectangular sheet, there would be at two intervals (to coincide with the second and fourth side of the final folded case) a small extra square of metal which would then be folded over one another to form a simple cap. Before folding, the cap had been decorated with a si…
