Copper farthing token of Michell Russell of Smithick, Falmouth with the arms assigned to the Russell family of Falmouth, a chevron between three escallops, on the obverse. "The latter charge forms part of the coat of arms of the Russells, Dukes of Bedford. Michael Russell, a physician, was Mayor of Truro in 1736" (Williamson, 1967, p.98, No.11). But the token likely dates from the 1660s when tokens were being produced in this area of Falmouth. "An alderman in the charter" (Mayne & Williams, 1985, p.24, No.6A).

An incomplete Roman copper alloy plate brooch in the form of a rabbit with young. Only the bottom half of the brooch survives, the remainder including the extremities of the rabbit now missing due to old breaks. The front face of the brooch is slightly convex and decorated with two small cells in the shape of rabbits facing each other, possibly to represent offspring or young. These are separated by an incised six pointed star and would have once been enamelled, however no trace of the enamel survives. On the back face of the brooch is a small, corroded lug that would presumably have …

Object type: BOOK FITTING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire

Complete copper alloy hooked book fitting (book clasp) of probable very late medieval or post medieval date (1450-1650). The fitting is formed from a single cast sheet of copper alloy which is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and profile. At one end the fitting tapers and a small sub-rectangular integrally cast projection extends. This has been bent to form a shallow hook. At the opposite end to the hooked terminal the body of the plate has been pierced in two places. These holes held copper pins (of which one remains) which would have secured the plate to the book. The fitting me…

A very corroded and incomplete fragment from a copper alloy harness pendant of probable Medieval date. The pendant has the remains of a small suspension loop set at right angles to the faces, although the top of the loop is now missing due to old breaks. It is uncertain precisely what shape the pendant would have been as much of it is missing due to old breaks, although there is a possible curved corner at the top of the pendant that might indicate a shield, multifoil or even circular shape. There is much encrustation and corrosion, with no decoration surviving to allow for a closer id…
