Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete cast lead alloy double sided token of probable Medieval to Post-Medieval date (c. AD 1250 – c. AD 1800. Diameter: 19.7mm; thickness: 4.9mm. Weight: 10.36g. One side has a prominent raised rim enclosing a slightly raised standing bird with wings folded and facing right. Two legs are barely visible. The other side also has a raised design consisting of a long saltire cross, the arms of which reach the edge of the flan. Within each quadrant there is a circular pellet. The token has a whitish grey patina on both faces. Due to the uncertainty of the date of such tokens…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete cast copper alloy double looped buckle of Medieval to Post-Medieval date (c. AD 1350 - c. AD 1650). Length: 24.3mm; width: 26.2mm and 2.5mm thick. Weight: 3.48g. The pin is missing. The frame is sub-circular in plan and has a central bar forming two similar 'D'-shaped loops. At the front the frame is convex and the rear is flat. The bar is sub-triangular in cross-section, flat at the rear. Similar buckles have been published by Whitehead and these are dated c. 1350-1650 (Whitehead 1996, 45, refs. 255 and 256). The surfaces are corroded and uneven and are coated i…

Record ID: CPAT-310DE7
Object type: BURNT FLINT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
This is a lump of flint with evidence of knapping and possibly fire cracked. It is probably of Neolithic origin. There is a clear platform and some conchoidal scars on the possible ventral surface. The possibly dorsal side has negative scars. The material is now a pale grey-brown with extensive crazing throughout the piece. This was found in the vicinity of 4 other recorded lithic tools. As to its original purpose, debate rages over whether this was intended to be a scraper or is a core.

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
This is an interesting piece of flint, found in the same vicinity of four other lithic tools. At first glance it might appear to be debitage or a waste core; however, it does have signs of further working beyond being a simple flake. There is a large piece of cortex remaining but it is difficult to be clear as to which is the proximal end. The ventral undulating surface is marked by two longitudinal fractures with associated conchoidal scars that may be the result of stress fracturing within the piece. The narrower end is broken off, leaving an end that may have been pointed at ou…

Object type: THUMB NAIL SCRAPER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
This Lithic tool is a finely crafted, small Thumb nail scraper of probable Neolithic date. The working, distal edge of the tool is horseshoe in profile and is defined by approximately 15 pressure, or soft hammer flutes/channel flakes. The proximal end has a clear platform, some erailleur scars and a diffuse bulb of percussion. The dorsal surface has been further shaped with closely worked, long parallel channel flakes, perhaps to make the tool more comfortable in use. It has a thick cross section and a relative steep edge angle of approximately 80 degrees. The edge bears signs…

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
This is an example of a fire damaged/crazed flint that none the less, may exhibit evidence of having been deliberately worked. It has both and ventral and dorsal surfaces with a diffuse bulb of percussion and erailleur scar at the proximal end. The distal end appears to have been worked with scar evidence from pressure flaking. The flint is now a pale cream in colour and the whole surface is crazed with fine lines in evidence of the fire damage. It is probably Neolithic in origin and it was found in with four other lithic implements, all within 10 metres of each other.

Object type: THUMB NAIL SCRAPER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
This small flint Neolithic thumb nail scraper has a semi-circular edge profile with a flat proximal end showing some remaining platform. In profile, it is a relatively thin oblong section. The ventral surface has a diffuse bulb of percussion with erailleur scars. The dorsal surface has several negative scars from the shaping process. The working edge, or distal end of the tool, exhibits some fine pressure, or perhaps soft hammer flaking resulting in approximately 15 channel or fluted flakes to give the final working edge. The edge angle is approximately 60 degrees. The tool is…
