A fragment of a copper-alloy bracelet of Roman date. The piece consists of a short length of a Flat-section, or 'Ribbon strip', bracelet, similar examples to which have been found in 4th century layers at Baldock (Stead and Ribgy, 1986, p. 125) and Bancroft villa (Williams and Zeepvat, 1994, p. 303-4). The bracelet is narrow, of thin section and has a curvature consistent with its identification. At the centre of the upper surface is a raised lozenge with a horizontal groove down the centre; bordering on either side is a panel of closely-spaced vertical grooves. The piece measur…

A worn Roman copper alloy wax spatula handle, probably of 2nd to early 3rd century date. The handle is complete, although most of the iron blade has been lost. The handle depicts the bust of the goddess Minerva. Minerva is depicted wearing a crested helmet which is undecorated. Hair is depicted beneath the level of the helmet as a strip with diagonal lines cut in it. The face is worn but the eyes are roughly depicted as two rings with a line below to show the mouth. Minerva has sloping shoulders and round the base of the neck is a line of small triangles possibly the neck of an underg…

Fragment of a cast cu-alloy vessel or boss, probably dating from the late post-medieval or early modern period. The fragment is too small to allow for a definite identification. The fragment seems to have come off the rim of a small bowl or boss. The metal is fairly thick and the inside does not look worked or smoothed which suggests that it was hidden from sight. Two very small rivet holes remains near the rim of the fragment; the whole bowl/boss would have had approx. six rivet holes, given that there was the same distance between each two of them. The outer rim is decorated with sim…

A fragment of a copper-alloy Roman spoon. This style of spoon appears to have been used in Britain from the first half of the 2nd century onwards (de la Bédoyère, 1989, p. 101). Approximately half of the oval bowl remains in a bent and corroded state. Extending from the centre of the upper edge is a curved projection which would have enabled the spoon to have been hung on the side of a bowl. This projection extends into the stem which is of thin rectangular section. The point at which the stem ends consists of a clean vertical break, suggesting that it may have been deliberately c…

Cast cu-alloy pipe tamper in the shape of 'Britannia', the personification of Great Britain, dating from the early modern period, i.e. c. late 18th or early 19th century. The female figure is draped and wears a helmet. In her left hand she holds a shield which, around the small boos, is decorated with the stripes and colours of the British flag. She probably held something - possibly a spear or sword - in her right hand, but whatever it was, it was very fragile and is broken off. The figure is standing on a little pedestal reel which was used to tamp down the tobacco in the bowl of the…

A fragment of a copper-alloy spoon of Roman date. The piece consists of a mandolin-shaped bowl which is missing its upper portion. Examples of this type of spoon have been found in Colchester and Crummy (1983, p. 69), who classifies them as Type 3 spoons, suggests that they were probably in use throughout the Roman period. The bowl has a shallow curvature, and a flat rim around the perimeter. Both the upper and lower surfaces retain a significant amount of the original white metal coating. The piece measures 31mm long, 25.1mm wide and 3.7mm thick. It weighs 3.35g.
