Record ID: CORN-9BE806
Object type: CROSS
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast lead cross, cross-shaped in plan, with one bent arm, and triangulat in profile and section. There are raised ridges on the upper face of the cross, running the length of the arms which taper to points. There is a broken suspension loop on the end of one arm, so perhaps the cross was used as a pendant or badge. Its size and weight suggests that it might have been used as an ingot instead.
Griffiths, Philpott and Egan (2007) illustrate a similar example from Meols on page 152, Plate 28, No.1884, which is dated to the Medieval period. Other examples are referred to on page 158 tha…

Object type: SEAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fragment of a cast copper alloy badge, seal or token with letters 'V M' on one face. There appears to be part of a figure on the opposite face, but the object seems too thick for a token (Barrie Cook pers comm) and copper alloy was rarely used for seals (Geoff Egan pers comm). The recorder suggests that the three projections on the back might be for attachment and that the object might be part of a badge with a Latin motto on it, but that it is too fragmentary to be sure.
