A fragment of a copper-alloy Langton Down type brooch of 1st century AD date (R. Hattatt, 1982, p. 80). The tubular wings, which would originally have completely encased the spring, are now damaged on the underside. Four coils of the copper-alloy spring remain in-situ. A horizontal groove marks the point at the base of the head where the bow adjoins. The bow is of thin section, has an upper surface decorated with closely-spaced vertical ridges and grooves, and tapers towards the point where it is broken off. The piece measures 14.9mm long, 16.5mm wide and 5.4mm thick. The weight…

A copper-alloy Colchester type brooch of 1st century AD date. The brooch is incomplete, bent and corroded. The head is narrow and is missing one of its wings; the surviving wing has a flat underside and is possibly incomplete. A damaged protusion at the centre of the underside of the head possibly represents part of the spring mechanism, or may be the perforated lug which would have held the now-missing axis bar. Above this protrusion is a damaged rearward lug. The bow is of flattened-oval section and tapers to a pointed foot. Only a remnant of the catchplate exists and the pin is a…

Post medieval cast copper alloy handle, probably from a tankard. The item is oval in cross section and follows a shallow double (S) curve. It tapers toward one end which finishes in a rounded point which appears complete; it is 3.5mm wide by 3.7mm thick at this end. The other end is curved round at 90 degrees to the main piece and the top is concave creating a C shaped section. This wider end is broken from an old break and is 8.9mm wide by 5.0mm thick. It is 49.4mm long and weighs 10.7 grams. This appears to be part of a much larger object and is probably a handle from a tankard or p…

Probably a copper alloy attachment plate for a handle, possibly a Late Medieval or Post Medieval skimmer handle attachment plate. The sheet has a central semi circular raised section with flat sections to either side. The central raised section tapers to a point at one end. There are four rivet holes, two to each side, one near the wider end and one about two thirds of the way down. The wide end is probably complete, with the two corners cut off at an angle. This item appears to be a reinforced socket to hold a rod only something flat. It might be a skimmer handle attachment plate as …

Cast copper alloy flat bar of unidentified use, possibly a mount. The bar has circular terminals at each end with off centre circular piercing. From the circular terminals the bars run straight towards the centre, about a third of the way along are knops on either side and beyond these the bar expands out towards the centre forming a central lozenge shape with knops on the side points. It is 42.6mm long, 12.4mm wide at the widest point, 2.1mm thick and weighs 2.78 grams. The fragile nature of this item suggests it may be a purely decorative mount and the form and fabric suggests a po…

Copper alloy nail with a circular cross sectioned shank, slightly squared off at the point, and a seperate sheet head. The head is flat on top and convex underneath, a seam is clearly visible where it joins the shank. Nails are difficult to date and this example could be from the Roman to Post medieval period but the latter is more likely due to the manufacturing technique involved. It is 33.3mm long, the shank is 3.5mm in diameter and the head 10.6mm, it weighs 2.36 grams.

Roman copper alloy Hod Hill type brooch dated c.43-70 AD. The bow is complete but the majority of the head, the pin and part of the catchplate is missing. The head was formed of a rolled over sheet tube which held the hinge to which the pin was attached, only part of one side of this and part of the central slot for the pin survives. From the head the bow curves through a gentle 90 degree curve to form a convex curved bow before curving in a slightly concave shape down to the foot. The foot terminates with an integral circular flat knop. Below the head the bow widens into a flat st…
