Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy strap end dating from the late medieval period. The strap end is the sort with a hollow socket and ornate decoration, sometimes knows as lyre shaped. In this example, the lyre shaped decoration has broken off, leaving just the hollow socket. This is 23.9mm long, 21.5mm wide and 7.1mm thick. It is an integrally cast box with the corroded remains of two rivets at the attachment end which would have held the strap in place. The front of the box is decorated with a blackletter lower case A on a background of wavy lines. There are three raised moulded bars above, before the …

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
9 clay pipe bowl fragments. The bowl fragments are from a variety of different pipes, all of which are undecorated except for a line of rouletting near the bowl rim. The fragments are made from moulded fine white clay. The stems weigh 147g. Clay pipes were made in England from the mid 17th to the early 20th century. To date more precisely clay pipes the pipe bowl or any decoration is need. As there are no diagnostic features on these stems, they are given this broad dating range, but they are probably not dated to the 19th to 20th century due to the lack of ornate decoration.

A copper alloy harness pendant mount dating from the medieval period. The mount is 67.2mm long, 20.5mm wide and 2mm thick. It is a bar which is lozenge shaped in plan with a collar at each end before a fleur-de-lys shaped terminal. There is a central rivet hole and one in each terminal. From the centre of the bar project two lugs downwards. These would have originally been bent into loops to for part of the hinge with the harness pendant itself. The mount has a patchy purple and green patina. A similar but shorter bar can be seen on page 27 of "Harness Pendants" by Cherry, in Saunders…

A copper-alloy harness mount with a hinge fitting at one end which is probably medieval in date. The plate is lozenge shaped in plan, with a trilobed projection from the centre of each edge. The front of the plate is decorated with a quatrefoil shape cast as a recess. There are also two circular rivet holes, one at each end of the plate. At one end of the plate projects a double lug, one of which is broken, with a transverse circular hole through the surviving lug. This is part of a hinge fitting. A late medieval date is the most likely.

A copper alloy pastry jigger dating from the post medieval period. Only the forked attachment and the wheel survive, with the handle missing. The surviving part is 49.2mm long, 34.5mm wide and 9.2mm thick. The wheel is openwork with four radiating struts. The teeth are arranged in groups of three which is a slightly unusual feature. There is a patchy black coating which can often suggest a seventeenth century date. Similar examples can be seen in Bailey's "Detector Finds", page 96 dated from the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries.

A complete cast copper-alloy hooked tag dating to the post-medieval period. The artefact has survived well and all of its attributes are intact: curved hook (bent), sub-rectangular openwork body (slightly bent), rectangular attachment loop. The body of the tag has a solid, moulded foliate section at its base, where it joins the hook. From this a central line emerges, bifurcates, and curves round on itself on each side, before terminating in an openwork 'S'. Within this, prongs ensure that the openwork area takes the form of a pair of trefoils. The reverse is flat, carrying the trefoil…
