Object type: STUD
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk

an incomplete silver stud of possible Roman date. It is circular, about two-thirds extant, with parts missing due to old breaks, and part of the circumference folded back on itself. The stud has moulded decoration, depicting a face, probably that of a lion, with eyes, nose, mouth and ears, and a mane above. Decorated studs normally have a central shaft, lacking in this example, which may have been attached by solder, of which there may be traces on the reverse. An example of a decorated lion head stud, with a shaft, from Hatcheston is illustrated in Blagg et al, 2004, no.260.

A square silver sheet mount dating from the post medieval to modern period. The sheet is very thin and has been machine stamped with a beaded circle with an inner border of dots and has bevelled sides. Both ends are broken suggesting that the object was originally rectangular. There are small circular rivet holes, one in each of two corners. The sheet is somewhat crumpled and it is impossible to be certain if it was flat or curved originally. It was probably fixed onto a dress accessory as an ornament such as a stick or parasol ferrule. It probably dates from 1750 – 1900.
