An incomplete cast copper alloy buckle pin of Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date (c. AD 450 - c. AD 600). Length: 31.2mm; width: 10.0mm and 15.5mm thick. Weight: 5.14g. These pins are traditionally known as 'shield on tongue' types. In plan, the 'shield' element is 'waisted' at each side and curved at the end. The shaft (tongue) is D-shaped in cross-section throughout its length and is flat on the under side. The pin-tip curves downwards slightly and is rounded at the end. An Early-Medieval Visigothic 'pseudo-imperial' gold tremissis, dating to the 6th century (pre-580). The type was probably of a type introduced by Theodoric I in 509, based on contemporary Byzantine issues. The coin is closely paralleled by examples illustrated in Grierson and Blackburn (1986, plates 10-11, especially no. 202). Grieson and Blackburn (1986, 48) state: '[The] profile bust of the obverse has a highly devolved cross on the chest, this being one of the most distinctive features separating Visigothic pseudo-tremisses from those of the Burgundians and the Franks. …

Heavily worn and much abraded coin of possible Roman date. The coin is possibly either a radiate or nummus but much of the surface has been stripped through contact with acidic soils. From the weight and size it is likely to date from the 4th century, possibly the house of Constantine 307-361. No detail survives.

Object type: JETTON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Heavily worn and much abraded copper alloy token / jetton. From the thickness and surface patina it is suggested that it may be a Nuremburg (or similar type) jetton dating from the post medieval period 1550 – 1650. It is also possible that this example has been heavily burnt and through abrasion almost all the surface has been lost.

A bent and corroded lead pilgrim/secular badge of late medieval to early post-medieval date. No parallel could be found for this piece but it is suggested (Egan, pers. comm.) that the design is derived from the badges issued at the shrine of Henry VI at Windsor, Berkshire (see Spencer, 1998, no. 208; and also Egan, 2005, p. 207-8, nos. 1149 and 1150). Egan suggests that the figure depicted may be Cardinal Wolsey, who was a prominent figure in the campaign to have Henry VI recognised as an official saint. The prominent hat and bible (see below) certainly indicate that the person depicte…
