An incomplete cast copper-alloy pin probably of Roman date (50-300 AD). It is most likely that this is a hairpin; however, due to the fact that pins can be used for multiple tasks it is difficult to attribute function. The pin is broadly sub-rectangular in plan tapering from the head to a blunted terminal, which may be broken. It is cast in one-piece. The head of the pin is circular in diameter with a conical terminal which tapers to a turned / waisted body, beneath which is a small circular collar. Beneath the collar is a square sectioned shaft of the pin. This tapers evenly along its…

A complete and undamaged knapped, ground and polished axe head of later Neolithic date (2500-2100 BC). The axe was knapped from a light grey/white black volcanic tuff. This rock type is formed from compressed volcanic ash that is found in Britain and Ireland in a band that runs down the Irish Sea from the Lake District (the Langdale’s source Group VI), County Antrim (Ireland), through North Wales (Graig Lwyd Group VII), and into Cornwall and Devon (Groups XVI and IV respectively). Volcanic tuff is similar to flint in that it can be finely worked, ground and polished. This axe is …

Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small triangular copper-alloy hooked tag of early-medieval date. The tag has been cut from a sheet, with the apex of the triangle recurved to form the hook. The flat object is missing the attachment end, as it has been broken. Therefore the rivet holes no longer survive. The object has corroded to a dull dark greyish-green colour with areas of pitting and evidence of bending. Hooked tags such as this could date from the 7th to 11th centuries; this examples is more likely to be from the later end of that range.
