Object type: SPUR
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Telford and Wrekin
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy fragment of a medieval spur. The fragment consists of the side and terminal parts of the spur. The object consists of a straight arm and, at one terminal, two pierced lugs forming a figure of 8 design transverse to the arm. The lugs are circular, but one is incomplete. On the front of the object, between the lugs, there is a raised triangular design, flanked by two horizontal grooves. The arm expands from the lugs, and rather than being flat, it is slightly uneven in profile. It is broken at the point of a raised design (with a transverse curved edge). The a…

A cast lead (alloy?) disc shaped object which may be a weight, token or gaming piece. The front of the object features a concentric rib within the disc, and a raised border around the circumference. The inner rib stands in slight relief of the border when the object is viewed in profile. There is a raised pellet in the centre of the front of the disc, and two “Y” shaped designs with internal pellets, also raised, joining the inner rib with the central pellet. There is also a further rib, in low relief, between the inner rib and the border. The reverse of the disc is plain, although…

Incomplete cast copper alloy closed (rumbler) bell (cast pellet bell). The bell consists of a pair of hemispheres soldered together and an internal iron pellet. The lower hemisphere has two circular perforations, joined by a linear aperture. The upper hemisphere has two circular apertures and an integral suspension loop, which is incomplete. The lower hemisphere is decorated with linear grooves radiating from one side of the linear aperture. On the other side of the aperture is an indistinct design within a semicircular design, beyond which linear grooves also radiate. The linear a…

Object type: KEY (LOCKING)
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Leicestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A medieval copper alloy rotary key. The bow is broadly lozenge shaped in plan, and consists of five circular perforations, the smallest approximately at the centre, with larger perforations in the four corners. The two largest perforations are in line with the shank. Whilst broadly lozenge shaped in plan, the external edges of the bow are rounded, following the curves of the internal circular perforations. Where the curved lines meet (approximately in the centre of each side of the lozenge), there are double grooves. There is a knop at the terminal of the bow. The shank is ovoid rathe…

Object type: PALSTAVE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy low flanged (broad blade) palstave dating from the Middle Bronze Age (1500-1150). The transverse butt is slightly uneven and incomplete. The septum is flat on both sides of the palstave. Flanges surround the septum, except at the butt. These flanges increase in height towards the blade, with the zenith at the curved stop. The protruding stop is positioned over a third of the way down the palstave. There is a loop between the stop and the blade on one of the sides of the palstave. There is some visible evidence of casting flashes running down the centre of both side…

A copper-alloy hand from a figurine. The first two fingers are extended in the gesture of benediction, suggesting it came from a figure of Christ or a saint. The hand is moulded at the front to indicate the palm, with the fingers outlined by grooves that appear to have been scratched into the metal rather than cast. The tips of the two extended fingers have broken off in antiquity. The back is flat. At the wrist is one groove marking the sleeve and then the metal juts out all around at right angles and has rough edges from an old break. This remnant of the rest of the figurine is wide…

Object type: JUG
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
This copper alloy object is most probably a handle from a rounded, Roman, or later medieval period jug of utilitarian type. The handle is 'L' shaped and there is no evidence of additional decoration.
If we consider that this handle has a diagonal measurement of 90mm, we can postulate a rough size of the whole vessel using the guide on the Asmolean Museum web site. Given the details within the site, it would suggest from other examples, a vessel around twice that in height, thus 180mm. If we then use the ashmolean.org – PotWeb - NewBodleian Internal Radius calculations, we ca…

Object type: RAPIER
Broad period: BRONZE AGE

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast cu-alloy rapier blade dating from the Middle Bronze Age, ca. 1500-1250BC. It is likely to belong to the Acton Park 2, Taunton (Cemmaes) or Pennard metalwork assemblage, corresponding to Needham’s (1997) Period 5, c. 1500-1150BC. The hilt (which was made from perishable material such as antler, wood or bone) is missing and so are the rivets with which it was attached to the blade. The blade itself was very thinly cast and is very worn today.

Object type: FLANGED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast cu-alloy short flanged axe dating from the Middle Bronze, ca. 1500-1150BC. This axe is likely to belong to the Acton Park 2, Taunton (Cemmaes) or Pennard metalwork assemblage, corresponding to Needham's (1997) Period 5, c. 1500-1150BC. The axe is very worn, especially the lower part and the blade. A curious feature is that one side the flanges are much longer than on the other. This is unusual; normally the flanges are of equal lengths on both sides. The blade is narrowly, but much curved and a couple of dents and nicks might indicate wear. The upper part of the axe is not as …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete socketed side-looped spearhead dating to the Middle Bronze Age. The spearhead is likely to belong to the Acton Park 2, Taunton (Cemmaes) or Pennard metalwork assemblage, corresponding to Needham's (1997) Period 5, c. 1500-1150BC. The spearhead is corroded and incomplete, missing most of the blade and some of the socket on one face. The spearhead was likely to have been short and similar to Savory (1980) nos. 227 - 230, which Savory argues are of Acton Park metal, although no. 228 gave an analysis suggesting Pennard metal. A side-looped spearhead from the Thames at Mortla…
