Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Unidentified mount or fitting. The item is essentially an elongated triangular shape with two circular rivet holes at the base of the triangle and a further single rivet hole at the tip of the elongated (round-ended) apex. The item is folded back on itself so that it would, if attached to cloth, leather, etc. have provided a suspension loop. In this sense if is rather like the fittings for the pendant mounts seen in Egan & Pritchards, 'Dress Accessories, 1150-1450', p.223, fig. 140 although the arrangement of the rivets is different. The manner in which the rivets are arranged in t…

Object type: PIN
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast copper-alloy pin of probable mid-late Anglo-Saxon date. The pin shaft, which is circular in section, is bent at a sharp right-angle about three-quarters along its length. The head is globular (bi-conical) with a slight fine collar where it meets the shaft. The patina is a rich mid green. Pins of this type are sometimes dated as Roman, especially if there is no collar between the pinhead & shaft but many are also known from Anglo-Saxon contexts. In this case the collar and close association of other Anglo-Saxon material makes the later date more likely. Dated c…

Object type: PIN
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete but corroded cast copper-alloy pin of probable mid-late Anglo-Saxon date. The pin shaft, which is circular in section, is bent at a sharp right-angle halfway along its length. The head is polyhedral (multi-facetted)and decorated with ring and dot design. Pins of this type are sometimes dated as Roman, esppecially when there is no collar between the pinhead & shaft but many are also known from Anglo-Saxon contexts. Object type: TWEEZERS
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a pair of cast copper-alloy tweezers of probable mid-late Anglo-Saxon date. The portion remaining is one half of the sub-triangular pincers. The tweezer edge has a slightly curled over end. The exterior is decorated with ring and dot design. Tweezers of this type are typically dated as Anglo-Saxon but similiar examples are known from Roman contexts. In this case the close association of other Anglo-Saxon material makes the later date more likely. Dated c.700-900 AD.

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worn and corroded incomplete cast copper-alloy mid-late Anglo-Saxon strap end. The strap-end is essentially a flat oval in shape with a break at the point where the V shaped split, which forms the attachment for such items, would have been. The reverse is plain and the front carries a pointed zoomorphic head with snout and flattened ears as the terminal whilst the main body of the strap-end was probably decorated with interlacing design but is now too corroded to be certain. This type of strap end falls into the classification category Thomas Class A (probably Type 1). Dated c.700-900 AD.
