An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman nail cleaner, consisting of a broken suspension loop attached to an incomplete leaf shaped shaft. The loop is in the same plane as the shaft, and the bar adjoining the two sections is decorated with three transverse ribs. The shaft begins below this, flaring to a maximum width of 12.68mm before beginning to taper. The tapering appears to reduce just before the point at which the shaft is broken. At this transitional point, the shaft is 5.19mm in width. One face of the shaft is decorated with a single punched ring and dot. The other side has this d…

Description and discussion supplied by Irene Szymanski. Description: Quatrefoil-shaped copper alloy pendant with bent suspension loop. The pendant has a raised border and frame for a lozenge-shaped central cell; within the cell a lion rampant, and within each of the lobes of the quatrefoil a fleur-de-lys. A small amount of red enamel remains within the central cell, and areas of blue enamel beyond it. The lion and fleurs appear to have been originally silvered, along with the frame of the central lozenge and the outer edge of the pendant itself; it is likely that the back was also sil…

Identification, description and discussion supplied by Irene Szymanski. Description: A shield-shaped copper alloy pendant, suspension loop intact. The surface is in extremely poor condition, with the original design difficult to decipher other than a central lozenge. Most of the interior of the lozenge is occupied by a five-pointed flower, either a cinquefoil or a rose, and there may have been devices in the area beyond the lozenge, but they are not recoverable. Very small areas of red enamel are visible around the edge of the cinquefoil and beyond the edges of the lozenge. There a…

An incomplete Roman copper alloy Dragonesque brooch. The S-shaped body has two terminals which take the form of a head with curved snout, although both heads are incomplete. Bayley and Butcher (2004, p123) identify these as characteristics of the Dragonesque brooch, the heads of which also have large ears and a circular sinking representing the eye. The ears are missing on this example, and the poor surface condition mean that the detail around the area of the eyes is unclear. Bayley and Butcher (ibid. p 123) state that the pin [used to secure the brooch to a garment] is looped arou…
