Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fishing or net weight made from a natural stone, probably dating to the late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age. Although the perforation looks natural it was most certainly enlarged to utilitise it and furthermore, has grown in diameter over the centuries. The stone is a soft sandstone and the rope or net it was attached to made it bigger through constant friction. Although these objects are difficult to date if found out of context, T Padley (Keeper of Archaeology) of Tullie House in Carlisle confirms the here given date, stating that they have a number of these objects from Cumbria …

Object type: SPOON
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy very worn and incomplete possible Roman spoon bowl. The bowl has no surviving edges, they are all incomplete, it is dished with a concave inner face and convex outer face and a pointed oval shape. On the outer face at one end there is a small curvilinear loop like projection and another fragment of this projecting from the edge of the inner face. This could be the start of a handle, this and the shape of the bowl makes it possible that this object is a 'pear-shaped' Roman spoon bowl (Crummy 1983, 70, 2012), although it is too worn to be sure of this identification. T…

Incomplete iron spear. Only two fragments of the blade survive, and a fragment of what may be from the butt end of the spear, although it does not fit any known type. The two fragments represent the tip and the main body of the blade. Both sections are very corroded. The tip is neatly rounded at the terminal appearing as if it has been worn round rather than being broken at the tip. The blade is lozenge shaped in cross-section and leaf shaped in plan, and widens to the shoulders from where it quickly narrows again and forms a circular-sectioned shank. The third fragment is …

Incomplete copper alloy girdle hanger. The hanger is in three pieces, however it is very likely that part of the shank is still missing. The shank is rectangular in plan and in cross-section with an integral loop at the top set at a right angle to the plane of the object. One side of the shank is decorated with an incised perimeter however this side is also very worn and covered in places with iron corrosion which obscures the decoration. The iron corrosion suggests that the girdle hanger was lying next to or beneath other iron objects such as keys or latchlifters. The terminal of the…
