Object type: COIN WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy half angel coin weight of very late medieval or post-medieval date. The square uniface coin weight measures 14.3mm by 14.3mm by 1.7mm and weighs 2g. The front of the weight depicts St Michael spearing a dragon and the back is plain. The angel denomination was in production between 1464 and 1604 but as St Michael's right leg is bent and left leg is straight on this example, it probably dates from after 1493 (Withers and Withers 1995, p. 21).
