Incomplete Post Medieval cast copper alloy buckle chape, AD 1660-1720. The chape belongs to Whitehead’s (2003, 96) class IV of anchor types. It would have been part of a shoe or knee buckle with a drilled frame so that it cold be hinged on a separate spindle. The chape has been cast in a shape similar to an anchor, with a curving lower edge that extends round into two curving prongs. One of these prongs has broken off completely. From what would have been the centre of the curving lower edge project three small triangular wedges. These now abut one of the curving prongs on one side, …

A Post Medieval cast copper alloy hook-section of a two-piece clasp (1550-1650 AD). The fitting is flat backed and has a moulded front. The central plate is oval in plan with three attachment-knops and two ornamental knops. Within the oval plate is a raised oval panel bearing a foliate design. The raised oval panel is contained within a beaded border. At one edge of the plate is a projecting blunt hook. The hook of this type of clasp is noted for curving upwards and back towards the plate, rather than downwards. The hook is flanked on either side by a small attachment knop to allow th…

Incomplete Medieval to Post Medieval cast copper alloy openwork strap fitting (1400-1600 AD). The mount is circular in plan with a trefoil lozenge-shaped projection; it is possible that the mount was shaped like a shell or, if used the other way round, a pomegranate. In the lower half of the circle there is a large openwork section. It would have originally been divided into three sections by two solid bars, but these have broken off leaving two pointed knops. On the reverse of the mount there are two internally-cast rivets. They are parallel along the central vertical axis of the moun…

Incomplete Medieval to Post Medieval cast copper alloy figurative strap mount (1400-1600 AD). The mount is shaped like a shell with a projecting rectangular terminal at the base. It has a D-shaped section with a flat back. The front surface of the mount is decorated with incised ridges to define the shape of the shell. The base of the shell is waisted, opening out slightly into a sub-rectangular section. This possibly folded round back on itself, it is difficult to discern as the back of the mount is worn and covered in concretion. From the centre of the shell at the reverse an interna…

Post Medieval cast copper alloy double loop oval buckle frame. Both loops are oval with a D-shaped section and flat back. In the centre of each loop's outer edge protrudes a round knop with a flat top and moulded rosette. The strap bar is narrowed and recessed with has pointed knops at either end. There is evidence of the remains of iron corrosion on the strap bar, possibly remains of part of the pin. The buckle is 49.5mm long, 28.6mm wide, and 3.1mm thick; it weighs 7.82 grams. Whitehead (2003) illustrates a similar buckle (p. 66, No. 408) which he dates to c.1550-1650.

Copper alloy sheet buckle plates. The plates are square and have two projecting tabs to fit over the missing strap bar, with a notch in between for the pin. There is evidence of two rivet hole at the opposite end. The rivits are both missing. The front plate contains the decoration of an animal. The buckle plates are 26.5mm long, 21.3mm wide and 2.1mm thick. They weigh 5.67 grams. Without a frame it is hard to date the plate precisely but the shape and decoration suggests a Medieval date between 1150 - 1500.

Zoomorphic Post Medieval cast copper alloy fragment, probably a strap clasp, 1500-1700 AD. The zoomorphic terminal has been cast in the shape of a stylised beast with a pointed muzzle and open mouth. It has moulded eyes and, inline with the eyes and slightly further back, ears pointing backwards to the neck. At the base of the top of the head is a projecting rounded notch, which may have been part of the catch of the clasp. The surface of the fitting has a dark olive-green patina and traces of tinned decoration. The fragment measures 17.6mm long, 4.2mm thick and weighs 20.7 grams.

Incomplete early Post Medieval cast copper alloy mount, 1500-1600 AD. The mount has broken along one side so it is not possible to be sure what shape it was when complete, but it was probably square or rectangular in plan. The find has three complete sides forming three sides of a square; the other side has broken along a diagonal axis. The mount has been cast in copper alloy with an internal circular-sectioned rivet. This projects from the reverse of the mount, in what would be a central position if the mount were square-shaped. The mount is badly worn and the reverse has a good deal …

An incomplete Medieval cast lead alloy ampulla, 14th-16th century AD. The find consists of around 60% of the ampulla flask: the neck has broken off, possibly due to being torn open. The body of the flask has been decorated on both sides: one side has a basically executed scallop-shell design, the other appears to have a geometric design of a triangle, or possibly an ‘A’ within a circular border. The incomplete ampulla measures 22.6mm long, 15.6mm wide and 6.4mm thick. It weighs 9.23 grams. Ampullae were an important kind of pilgrim souvenir in the medieval period. They were designe…
