Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy handle fragment of a Roman patera or similar vessel. The object is of flat section. The central portion is roughly rectangular in plan, although the widest point is at the centre, and from here it tapers slightly in both directions. At the centre, extending outwards on each side, is an angled 'tang'. The point at which each tang meets the main body of the object is marked by a deep groove. Although no exact parallel could be found for this handle, examination of similar patera handles suggests that this piece probably comes from the end closest to the bowl of the ve…

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy horse harness pendant of probable 14th century date (see N. Griffiths; 1986; pp. 1). The pendant takes the form of a spade-shield decorated with a heraldic device. This device takes the form of a lion, facing left, guardant. The original enamel infill for the lion is missing but the surrounding dark blue enamel - which extends right to the edge - is largely intact. Research by the finder suggests that this crest may belong to the Breouse Family, Earls of Glamorgan, who lived in Lewes, Sussex. A similar example can be seen in N. Mills' "Medieval Artefacts" (1999; pp. 6…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A pig fibula pin. The pin is made from a pig fibula with a pierced head, which is now incomplete. Both faces have been shaped to form flattened surfaces. Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Cast copper alloy gilded figurine of a baby bird. Possibly has lead inside as it is very heavy. The metal has corroded slightly to give a reddish tinge. Some of the gilding remains. The detail of the bird's feathers have been picked out. It is sat down with it's wings folded at the side and the head facing forwards. It has a small tail which is visible. The base looks as though it was attached to something else. It is possible it was sat in a nest as part of the figurine. The gilding could suggest a date of c.1300 onwards for this object. However the bird has 2 holes in it's back…
