A cast copper-alloy spur rowel. The rowel is in the shape of a five-pointed star. The arms are rectangular with rounded corners and edges. There is central circular perforation through the centre of the rowel through which the rivet attaching it to the spur would have travelled. The rowel has a mottled green matte patina which is slightly abraded. It measures 37.39mm diameter, is 2.87mm thick, and weighs 7.1g. As the rowel is undecorated there are no diagnostic features to give it a narrow date, therefore it can only be dated the late Medieval to Post Medieval periods.

The fragments include the vamp (front upper), two pieces of the sole, the cupping from the heel (U-shaped piece) and the inner sole. There is an iron rivet still present in the cupping. The shoe probably was a low-cut slip-on shoe possibly with a stacked heel. The heel and the back of the upper are missing as well as the rest of the sole. Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy mount of probable Roman date. No exact parallel could be found for this piece but its general form and patina strongly suggest a Roman date. Copper-alloy furniture and casket fittings from the Roman period are well-attested - see, for example, N. Crummy; 1983; pp. 115-119. The head is hemispherical and has a moulded swirling pattern of ridges and grooves on its upper surface; a moulded band and ridge extend around the bottom edge. The underside of the head is flat and extending downwards from the centre point is an integral rivet of circular section. The object mea…
