Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy mount of probable Roman date. No exact parallel could be found for this piece but its general form and patina strongly suggest a Roman date. Copper-alloy furniture and casket fittings from the Roman period are well-attested - see, for example, N. Crummy; 1983; pp. 115-119. The head is hemispherical and has a moulded swirling pattern of ridges and grooves on its upper surface; a moulded band and ridge extend around the bottom edge. The underside of the head is flat and extending downwards from the centre point is an integral rivet of circular section. The object mea…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A buckle, or similar strap fitting, cast from copper alloy. This artefact has a D-shaped loop, which has been attached to a strip of copper alloy (parallel to the straight line of the D-shaped loop), by two short strips of copper alloy, set at right angles to the parallel strips. It looks likely that this artefact had no pin, but was part of buckle that held a strap by friction. This artefact is well-preserved with a pitted mid reddish-brown surface. It probably dates to the post-Medieval period.
