Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy Roman hinged T-shaped brooch with the remains of some red and yellow enamelled decoration. The enamel is set into a panel of alternating triangular and lozenge shapes running the length of the bow on the upper face. This type and pattern of decoration is similar to Hull's 'Sawfish' brooches, but the sides of the bow do not now have these projections and it is narrower than this type, but consistent with other examples of T-shaped brooches. Half way down the back of the bow are the remains of the attachment edge of the catchplate, and the footknob is plain a…

Incomplete cast copper alloy Roman Aesica-variant brooch with a central disc on the bow and the remains of a fantail beneath it. Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy strap end which dates from the medieval period. The object is 34.5mm long, 8.4mm wide and 2.6mm thick. It seems to be constructed from two pieces of metal probably soldered together at the closed end. Both pieces have snapped off where the plates would have thinned to allow the strap to fit between them, so the open end is missing. The main part of the strap end is rectangular, but at the closed end it has a narrowed neck and then a decorative collared terminal which is shaped like a fleur-de-lis with each lobe splitting into three at the ends. There are very faint trac…

In the centre of the flat base is an irregular sub-triangular hole that extends about halfway into the centre of the object. The function of this object is unknown. It has a diameter of 17.1mm and is 12.8mm thick. Objects like this are often described as gaming pieces but there are few excavated examples to which to compare them. Similar sized and shaped objects recovered from Anglo-Scandinavian building contexts in York have been identified as Hnefatafl pieces (Mainman and Rodgers, 2000). Hnefatafl was a game rather like chess. However, there are none made of lead. Possible gaming pieces that are…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of unidentified object: possible Middle Saxon strip mount, both ends missing, decorated with stamped ring-and-dot, a repoussé dot and an engraved line following both sides. While the rather spindly ring-and-dot is reminiscent of that found on one-piece bow brooches of the type found at Sedgeford and Flixborough, this object, being parallel sided, is unlikely to be a brooch. The boss can be compared with those on a mount fragment for Middle Harling, that was considered to be medieval (EAA 74, 64-5, fig. 45 no. 95). Length >18mm. Width 11.5mm. Possibly 8th or 9th century.
