Sixteen 3rd century copper alloy radiate coins found together in the same hole, approximately 16 inches deep. The coins all dated from 260 AD - 285 AD. Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Published
A Medieval signet ring with a circular bezel containing the image of a bird plucking a flower. Above the head of the bird is the following inscription:
I FFYNCHR
This is likely to denote a personal name, J Fincher, the bird, or finch, acting as a rebus. (A rebus is an image which represents a word).
The shoulders of the ring are fluted with three grooves, which turn into a fictive cable-work effect, the grooves being decorated with small punches. The back of the ring has seen a lot of wear, and these punches have, for the most part, been rubbed out.
The ring is silver gilt and…

Treasure Act number 2007 T169 Acquired by Exeter Museum
A 16th century silver-gilt dress-pin with hollow-cast spherical head. There is a circular hole in the base of the pin head, indicating where the shaft would have fitted. The entire shaft has been lost. The head is applied with filigree and granulated ornament in the form of circles and knops. Some of the knops are missing and some are worn. There is a prominent ridge running around the centre of the pin head, dividing the head into two hemispheres. This ridge appears silver, against an otherwise completely gilded head. The knop…
