Object type: AXE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large rough out for a Neolithic axe of Langdale type. The axe is knapped from a dark green/grey volcanic tuff which has developed a mottled brown/greyish patina. This rock type is formed from compressed volcanic ash that is found in Britain in a band that runs from the Lake District (the Langdale’s source Group VI), through North Wales (Graig Lwyd Group VII), and into Cornwall and Devon (Groups XVI and IV respectively). Volcanic tuff is similar to flint in that it can be flaked, ground and polished. Considering the findspot, the source for this axe is from Langdale. The rough out i…

Copper alloy radiate, probably of Allectus (AD 293-6) (Reece Period 14), probably PAX AVG, unclear Pax left. Mint unclear. Heavily worn/holed - unusual in a Roman context, so presumably indicates re-use in Anglo-Saxon times e.g as part of a necklace? This coin has been considered for Sam Moorhead's corpus for RIC.

Probably an irregular 3rd-century copper-alloy Roman radiate of uncertain emperor, probably one of the Tetricii, female figure on reverse, possibly Pax (c. 275 - c. 285 AD; Reece period 14). The thickness of the flan and the fact that the reverse figure does not seem to fit it properly suggest that this is a contemporary copy (barbarous radiate).

Treasure Act number 2007 T169 Acquired by Exeter Museum A 16th century silver-gilt dress-pin with hollow-cast spherical head. There is a prominent ridge running around the centre of the pin head, dividing the head into two hemispheres. This ridge appears silver, against an otherwise completely gilded head. The knop…
