Object type: ADZE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Essex

Lithic impliment: Mesolithic tranchet adze, dating 9000 to 6000 BC. There have been suggestions that tranchet adze continued in use into the Neolithic, however there is no direct evidence for this. The adze is an elongated oval in plan with a lenticular cross section with pointed edges. In profile the adze is sub-rectangular with elongated pointed blade end. The blade end shows no evidence of wear, however the blade end of adze could be restruck to form a new cutting edge. The rough shape of the adze was created using a hard hammer to remove the outer cortex of a flint nodule (however …

One complete inner lead disc of a post-medieval four part cloth seal. These seals were cast as plain and then later stamped with the chosen design. This disc is plain on the reverse whilst the front carries the 'Charles II type head' with the inscription OF ENG LAND around the portrait, the border is decorated with a circle of beading. This particular seal probably dates to the reign of James II (1685-1688). This disc has been pierced directly above the portrait and was possibly used as a pendant or label after its initial use as a seal.

It has been pierced at a position of six o'clock on the reverse. This corresponds with a position of ten o'clock on the obverse. The coin is in very worn and slightly corroded. Cast copper-alloy probable token. One side is decorated with an eight spoked wheel design whilst the other side is difficult to decipher due to overall wear & corrosion The item, especially the wheel design, bears some resemblance to the ubiquitious lead tokens but these are usually one-sided and are of an alloy that is predominantly lead. no good parallels were found for this item and it has been dated broadly to the later Medieval to early post Medieval based on stylistic grounds. The item has a diameter of 21.12mm, is 2.33mm thick and weighs 4.71g.

An almost complete cast lead seal matrix of Modern date (c. AD 1850 - c. AD 1920). Diameter 46.8mm, thickness 5.0mm. Weight 53.53g. The seal was used to impress a trader's name and a weight in pounds. It is circular in plan and small portions of the edges are missing due to modern breaks. At the centre, within an indented circle (diameter 28.5mm), is the weight marked in pounds (lb). However, this area has an old scuff mark which has obliterated the numeral. It is quite likely to have read 1/8lb. The inscription around the edge reads (from right to left (viewing an impression): IMPE…

Incomplete cast copper-alloy late medieval bell. The lower half of the bell has been lost through damage although what remains of the bell suggests that it was originally conical or 'bell-shaped' rather than spherical. The attachment loop, which is integrally cast is in the form of a rounded trianglular lug with drilled central hole of c.1mm diameter. Below the loop and above the main body of the bell, the bell has a pronounce waisted curve - the triangular lug is set perpendicular to this. The bell is in poor condition most of the original surface has been lost although the remai…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy object of medieval date. Stylistically, this piece bears strong similarities to 13th and 14th century spur buckles. However, the lack of any means of attaching a pin suggests that this may be a looped suspension mount. A similar, but articulated, example was discovered in excavations in London (see G. Egan and F. Pritchard; 1991; pp. 219, no. 1191). The circular 'frame' adjoins the rectangular plate. At each end of the plate a small copper-alloy rivet sits within a hole. The upper surface has traces of gilding. The object measures 23.7mm long, 10.7mm wide and 4.2mm…
