A copper alloy Roman bow brooch which probably dates from the first century AD. The brooch is 38.2mm long, 19.5mm wide and 6.9mm thick. It may be a Dolphin or Hod Hill type. The brooch has a gently curving bow which is decorated with two vertical grooves which are filled with a reddish material likely to be a form of corroded metal. It has short tapering wings which are also striped, but considerably worn. The head of the brooch projects back beyond the wings. The projecting area is thin and rectangular, and is moulded into two horizontal bands. There is a notch in the end which is pr…

It is a group B issue showing the second bust with II behind. There is a plume mintmark dating the coin to 1630 - 1631. The reverse legend is written out in full. For reference see North's English Hammered Coinage Volume 2, page 161, number 2250.

A lead alloy seal which is probably post medieval in date. The seal is formed from two sub-circular discs pressed together. It is 20mm long, 15.8mm wide and 3.7mm thick. Part of a design is visible on the smaller and less complete disc. It appears to be a ladder pattern of a row of rectangular boxes, above which is possibly a depiction of a chain running from side to side. Above that is a row of beading forming a border between the design and the legend. Just the bases of two letters in the legend can be seen; they may be F and A. The reverse is smooth. There was once a projecting loop…

A copper alloy knife handle terminal which is from a late medieval or early post medieval scale tanged knife. The terminal is trilobed with a narrow bar beneath the lobes. Each lobe is hollowed in the centre on both sides, but is not quite pierced. Underneath the decorated area, the terminal forms a narrower rectangular shape which is also rectangular in section, with a slot through the centre which is filled by iron, presumably the end of the tang. It is basically biconical, with a truncated and slightly domed top, concave upper sides curving to the medial band, and with the other cone elegantly extending into a shaft which flares out again at the bottom. There is a disc of metal on the base which seems to be acting like a rivet; it forms a thin, bruised, circular disc with a millimetre gap between the foot of the knob and the disc. The knob was presumably attached to a thin piece of metal, but not iron…

The brooch is 58.2mm long, 23.1mm wide and 13.9mm thick. It has a sprung pin with five coils of the spring on each side of the central spring loop. A copper alloy seal matrix which is circular and is medieval. The matrix is 19.5mm in diameter and is 6.8mm thick. There is a rib on the reverse which expands into a pierced lug at one end. The design appears to be an animal with four legs and a long tail in a tree. It is likely to represent a squirrel. The legend reads: " * SIGILLVM ANORIS", but the N should be an M making it "AMORIS", translating as 'the seal of love'. Another matrix with the same legend is recorded as IHS-D269D4 on the database, and another expressing a similar idea is IHS-54B227. The squirrel may represent secrecy…

A copper-alloy object which is essentially a split pin, but which may be a strap end of Medieval date. The object is 32.3mm long, 10.4mm wide and 6.4mm thick. It has a biconical head and a sub-rectangular shaft, most of which is divided by a slot which is 16.3mm long. The slot is 1.7mm thick so it seems more likely that the object was attached to leather than to a thicker material such as wood. Part of a copper-alloy rivet through the end of the shaft survives. Both faces of the shaft are decorated with incised lines along the edges like a border. The object has a deep brown patina wh…
