Object type: LINCH PIN
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Rotherham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An iron, but copper plated probable linch pin. The pin is very robust and is 106mm long. The pin is D shaped in section and tapers to a blunt point. It is 9.4mm wide at the thick end. The head of the pin is a separate spherical hollow knop which has a diameter of 14.5mm. There are vertical striations along the rounded side of the pin, and sloping transverse scratches on the flat side. The flat side is more worn at either end and not in the middle. Linch pins were used in the Iron Age and Roman periods to fix the wheels to the axels of vehicles. This probable pin is also probably from t…

A complete copper alloy Iron Age brooch. It is 42.8mm long, 13.5mm wide and 8.4mm thick. The brooch is an example of La Tene type II (Hattatt, 2000). It is made from a single piece of metal forming the pin and plate, which is coiled into a spring at the top. It then runs down the back of the plate, projecting backwards at the bottom with a side tab which bends round to form the catchplate. The piece of metal then loops forwards again and upwards and widens into the plate. This is decorated at the top with a convex circular projection with beaded decoration above and below, and the side…

Object type: SPUR
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Rotherham
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An iron prick spur which probably dates from the period between the ninth and twelfth centuries. The spur is a Y shaped piece of corroded metal. The sides curve round the wearer's leg but are described as straight because they do not kink to duck underneath the ankle bone. They are rectangular in section. The neck is square in section and tapers to a very small point rather than a separate goad. Straight sides instead of crooked ones suggest an early date, as does the very small goad. The terminals are missing. This prick spur is in good condition for iron; the metal is solid and is a…

Broad period: ROMAN

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy pin which may be Roman. The pin is bent over and has a tall pyramid shaped head. The pin is 46.7mm long, and the head is 3.9mm wide and 3.5mm thick. The shaft has a maximum diameter of 2.3mm. The shaft tapers to a point. The head is decorated with six circumferential incised lines dividing the pyramid into lobed elements. This decoration does not appear to be similar to other pins from the Early Medieval period, and although a Roman parallel cannot be found, stylistically the pin appears to have similarities with other Roman objects, so a Roman date is tentatively sugge…

There is a short rectangular projection from the centre of the figure of eight to one side, and an uneven crown shaped projection consisting of three short spikes projecting on the opposite side. There are two incised lines across the base of the “crown” which do not meet in the middle and are not parallel. On the reverse are two bent over spikes. A lead alloy probable perforated weight. The weight is cone shaped and has a circular hole through the centre. It appears to have been made in two pieces, first a hollow cone which was then filled with more lead leaving a line between the two pieces. There are two incised lines round the outside of the coin and possible cast decoration in the form of small vertical lines and hearts round the apex of the cone. At the top of the coin a small tube of lead extends; it is not clear whether this is part of a longer damaged tube, or whether damage to the cone has produced the tube. It is also…

Object type: HARNESS RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy harness ring of uncertain date. The ring is a sub-circular loop which is a rounded hexagon in section. It is 25.4mm long, 24.9mm wide and 3.6mm thick. At the narrower end of the loop the metal is much thinner and is worn, suggesting that the loop was suspended from this point. The exact function of the ring is uncertain; it may have been an attachment loop, a strap guide, or decorative. These objects are usually impossible to date as they have changed very little in the many centuries in which they were used.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy finger ring which is probably post medieval in date. The hoop is D shaped in section and flares to form a wider bezel. The bezel is an interesting trilobed shape and has incised scroll-like decoration. Unfortunately this is now unintelligible because of the extensive wear on the ring. It is possible that the design was originally a buckle, which was a common style of finger ring in the eighteenth century (Bailey, 1997, “Detector Finds 3”). The ring has an even dark and glossy patina, which probably indicates that it was once tinned or silvered. The ring has a diamet…
