Object type: STIRRUP
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount. It is a sub-rectangular shape in plan, however the upper edge tapers slightly and is incomplete. The sides are moulded with a pair on integral knops protruding, and the lower corners also have a single knop. The broken upper edge forms an asymmetrical 'V', but this damage is not too recent. The break may have occurred at a perforation, and the perforation then moved just below and off centre. The outer face is decorated with a high-relief simplistic animal head which is in the form of an upward pointing arrow with a pair of curved knops protrud…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A middle Bronze Age copper alloy fragment of a blade probably from a rapier. The blade fragment has a lozenge-shaped cross-section and it narrows in width from 24.79mm - 16.33mm. The fragment is very abraded and the majority of the surface is pitted and lost. The breaks have the same dark green patina as the rest of the object, suggesting the blade was broken in antiquity. There are parallels in form between these fragment and rapiers from Penard and Taunton metalwork assemblages (Rohl & Needham 1998: 129-132). References: Rohl, B. and Needham, S. 1998. The Circulation of Metal in the…

A cast copper alloy strap end. Formed from a single sheet, folded widthways (forming two plates). There is a blue enamelled decoration on the front plate, it takes the form of a capital letter R. The R is actually hollow and the area around it has been enamelled. It is therefore set within a rectangle. County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy mount of probable Roman to medieval date. No parallel could be found for this piece, but its general form suggests that it might be a Roman military fitting. On the reverse is an area of iron corrosion or mineralised leather. The artefact measures 14.6mm in diameter, 7.6mm high and weighs 3.44g.
