Object type: FLAT AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy flat axehead with flattened and flanged butt end, and expanded blade. The size of the axe and the slight angle and thinness of the blade suggest that the axe is quite early in the Bronze Age, probably from the Brithdir phase, c.2150-2000 BC. The axe in section is subrectangular, but still thin so there is no evidence of any side flanges. Since it was cast, the axe has lost part of its butt or hafted end, and has then, it seems, been used with a hammer as a chisel or cleaving tool. The axe varies in width from the blade at 45 mm to the butt end at 29.7 mm, and in thic…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Damaged sheet copper alloy mount or plate with five rivet holes, one with rivet extant. The plate is circular in plan and flat in section. There are concentric lines on the back of the plate, suggesting that it has been hammered by hand to stretch it out. The rivet is cylindrical and has been hammered onto the back of the plate, perhaps when it was being mounted. The rivet has also been made of sheet that has been turned in on itself and this is typical of rivets used to attach plates or harness to leather. Folded copper alloy sheet rivets are also used with 'repair patches' of sheet c…

Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete and broken cast copper alloy (possibly brass) “bee-hive” or “Heavy Duty” thimble of later medieval date (1400-1550). The thimble is incomplete and crushed, a small area of one of the sides is lost. Originally it is likely that the thimble was broadly D shaped in plan with gentle sloping sides and a shallow domed top. The top / dome is formed from relatively thick cast metal. Originally the base would have been either circular or slightly oval – it is now an irregular lentoid shape. The rim of the thimble is thickened but undecorated. There are no notches or folds p…

a medieval copper alloy buckle plate. It is rectangular and formed from a folded sheet plate. There is a central slot for a pin and the plate is recessed for a buckle frame. There are three rivets in a longitudinal row down the plate, with flattened circular heads. The outer surface is also decorated with incised lines outlining the rectangular shape of the plate, and there are faint traces of gilding. The underside is plain, and cut back from the line of recession, and is 2mm shorter than the outer side at the inside edge. The buckle plate measures 19.65mm in length and 29.46mm in wid…

Incomplete cast copper alloy unidentified object. The object is a fragment of what appears to have been a triangular or angled frame. The frame is triangular in cross-section and decorated around the outer face with a moulded floreate motif. It is unclear whether the object was once gilded. The object is reminiscant of a stirrup, however its triangular cross-section would seem strange for this function.

Damaged cast copper alloy double-looped annular buckle with slightly recessed, narrowed pin bar. The frame is circular in plan and semi-circular in section, with a flat base and convex profile. The upper face of the frame is decorated with moulded transverse lines that together create a cabled effect. The pin is missing and the frame is bent and broken just beyond one end of the bar. Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar example on page 47, No.270, which is dated to c.1400-1500.

Silver cuff link of Post Medieval, eighteenth century date (AD 1700 - AD 1800). Length 17mm, width 17mm and 2mm thick. Weight 1.47g. The silver sheet cuff link is octagonal in plan. It is convex at the front and concave at the back and appears to have been shaped around a former. At the front, each of the eight sides has a concave groove near the edge. The grooves join together to form a complete border. At the centre is a raised flower motif. The flower has four petals although these are barely visible due to wear. At the back of the object there is a silver wire loop in the centre s…

County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Probable incomplete copper alloy finger ring. The object is lozenge shaped with a broken hoop. One of the hoop terminals appears to be slightly narrowed suggesting that it could have been a brooch lug, however since it is broken it is very unclear. The bezel has a moulded extended side lug to either side, and a very deep channel running inside the perimeter. In the centre is a circular copper alloy ring and dot motif with a band of blue enamel within it.

Incomplete brooch of copper alloy, probably of the Nertomarus Langton Down type. The surface is corroded and the pin and most of the bow are missing. However, most of the head and spring are present. It measures 20x22mm and weighs 5.45g. The spring is partially enclosed within a broken cylindrical cover, that when complete would have completely enclosed it. Seven turns of the spring survive, and there would have been ten. The front of the cylinder is decorated with three moulded circular indentations arranged in a horizontal line, although the corrosion of the original surface mean…

Cast copper alloy zoomorphic buckle of probable Medieval date (1250-1450 AD). The buckle is irregular in plan with the buckle frame being rectangular from which an integral cast sub-rectangular bar projects and terminates in an oval pointed loop. The bar / shank is decorated with the head of either a dog or beast and the loop can be interpreted as a tongue. The integral cast bar contains the buckle pin (complete) which is hinged at the mid point between the frame and loop. The frame of the buckle is square in cross section. The pin is presumably held by an axis bar within the integral…

Incomplete copper alloy two-piece head stud or possible trumpet style variant brooch of Roman date (50-200AD). The brooch comprises a relatively rare form of head / pin attachment which consists of an irregular and slightly corroded oval socket. The socket has a slight lip to it which has been lost in places; the inner part of the socket has a white coloured paste present, which is stained orange in places by iron. This iron staining may come from either the burial environment or the remains of the pin fitting. The outer edge of the socket is decorated with a cast double circumferentia…
