Medieval copper alloy brooch with most of its gilding complete, measuring 40.3x42.8x1.9mm and weighing 8.19g. It is in the form of a cross. U shapes with incurving ends are between cross-hatched tear-drop shapes. There is an open diamond shape at the centre. One of the four arms has a 2.5mm diameter hole to accomodate a sheet metal pin. The metal was originally heavily gilded, much of which still survives. The brooch is curious in that the metal of the pin is a completely different colour to that of the body. Also one of the arms is thicker at 2.7mm with a flattened top, wh…

Copper alloy sword pommel. The pommel is of 'cocked' hat form and is undecorated. The pommel is divided into three sections; a main sub-pyramidal body with rounded apex, and two instepped terminals at either terminal. The pommel is hollow and there are two incomplete, circular-sectioned shanks contained on the reverse of the insteps, which would have secured the pommel to the hilt guards. The entire pommel measures 52mm in length, 13mm in width and 19mm in hight. The main body measures 34mm in length. The surface has an even light green patina, and is very smooth, appearing very…

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint axehead of Neolithic date. The object, which appears to be largely intact, is a good example of an unpolished thick-butted axe. The axe is sub-oval in section, measures 74.9mm wide at the rounded cutting edge and tapers towards the butt, which measures 53.8mm wide. Several flake removal scars are visible; these are multi-directional, but mostly extend downwards and outwards from the central ridge to the thin outer edges. The cutting edge shows signs of re-touching and possible evidence of wear. The colour of the flint varies between cream and orangey-brown and the surface o…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete postmedieval male anthropomorphic figurine. It is badly corroded and weathered, such that details have been lost, and the material is unclear, (though it is not iron, and is very dense, so may contain lead). The head is 23mm long and 17mm wide. The facial features are no longer extant, and the hairstyle is poorly preserved. Both arms are lowered, but are truncated above the elbow. Both arms are roughly circular in section. The torso of the figure is rather barrel-shaped, though detail has been lost. What remains of the legs are truncated above the knees, and are n…

Medieval copper alloy harness pendant, missing its enamel. It is 'square' in shape, measuring 29.3x27.7x1.5mm and weighing 10.15g. All original patina is missing. The pendant has a cross-hatch background, at the centre of which is a shield with a cross pommé voided at its centre. The area around the cross is recessed for the missing coloured enamel. There would also have been coloured enamel in the void of the cross. The cross itself would have been silvered or gilded, and the sruface of the rest of the pendant probably gilded. Copper alloy horse and rider brooch. The brooch is very worn all over, and many of the individual features are illegible. The brooch is in the profile form of a horse going right, with a male rider on its back. The horse has an incomplete snout, and the markings for the eyes and mane are no longer visible. The front leg is angled slightly forward to show the horse galloping, however the foot is missing. The rear leg is angled inwards beneath the body, again shown in a life like motion of galloping; the rear foot is also missing. The stump of the tail is present, however the rest of it …

It has a green patina, and is in good condition, though most of the enamelling has been lost, and the pin is absent. It consists of a central cicular field, inside which are raised, moulded concentric rings, and beyond which lie symmetrical, ornate, lunate terminals. The type is not common, but has a wide distribution. Hattatt (1985) lists close parallels from Roman Syria, Northumberland, the Rhineland, East Anglia, Richborough, and Colchester, some of which preserve…
