Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete cast lead weight decorated on both faces with a raised fleur de lis, or perhaps a Prince of Wales feathers, within a raised border. The weight is shield-shaped in plan, with incomplete upper edge and pointed end, and rectangular in profile and section. There is a hole in the top of the broken end, opposite to the point, which may have held and iron hook to suspend the weight.
The weight weighs 24.52 g which is equivalent to 378.4 grains or 0.87 ounce, so it might have weighed about an ounce when it was complete.
Biggs and Withers (2000) illustrate a shield-shape…

Fragment of a cast copper alloy skillet handle, decorated on its upper surface with a string of diamond shapes, with solid diamonds within open ones, end on end, running within two parallel borders. The fragment is rectangular in plan and semi-circular in section, suggesting that it was part of a substantial handle for a large skillet or container.
Butler & Green (2003) illustrate an example with a similar pattern on page 145, No.151, which is dated to the 17th century.
Allan (1984) illustrates an example that is equally thick in section in Fig.192, No.159, which is unstra…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete copper alloy Roman finger ring of Henig type XII, missing its (probably glass) setting and just under half of the hoop - the bezel and shoulders survive.
The bezel is oval in shape, 12.3x8.9mm and 1mm deep. The ring measures 20.9mm at its widest (diameter), and the hoop is 11.8mm either side of the bezel, narrowing to 5.7mm at the breaks. It weighs 4.23g.
On the underside of the ring, beneath the bezel, the edges are slightly chamfered. The ring is extremely pitted, and this may obsure chamfering (which may equally be worn away) on the other side.
The bezel has seve…

Object type: TWEEZERS
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete Romano-British or Medieval copper alloy tweezers, broken at the closed end. The fragment weighs 2.41g and measures 41x9mm. It is made from a thin sheet bent double with a small loop at the bend. The remaining arm is flat, and the end is not cut horizontal to the long edge, but at a slight angle. It also points inwards slightly. Tweezers were constructed by folding a sheet of metal in both the Romano-British and Medieval periods (Egan and Pritchard 1991, pg. 383). Therefore, it is difficult to determine a date where there is no decoration.

A rim sherd from large storage jar of probable 17th century date. The reduced earthenware fabric has some oxidised patches on the surface and contains moderate very small rounded quartz, occasional small sub-rounded black iron-rich particles and sparse small sub-rounded oolithic limestone. The sherd is internally and externally glazed with a brownish-green lead glaze. The curvature of the flat rim indicates a former rim diameter of c. 340mm. It is slightly recessed, possibly to take a lid. The dark colour of the fabric suggests that it may come from an East Devon/West Somerset producti…

Description: Silver finger ring of later medieval date, now slightly bent. A copper-alloy chisel of probable late Bronze Age date.
The blade, which is of rectangular section, is slender in appearance, expanding gradually in width, but narrowing in thickness towards the convex cutting edge. A moulded swelling separates the blade from the handle, the latter of which is of square section and tapers to a point at the top. It is likely that that the handle section would originally have sat within a wood or bone casing, no trace of which survives. The object is heavily corroded and there is a small hole on one side of the blade, which is probably the result of a…

Fragment of the body of a copper alloy cooking vessel. It measures 52x37mm and weighs 31.83g. The outside is black whilst the inside is covered in a green patina. On the rim is a rectangular notch, 15mm long and 3mm deep. This notch was made during the casting of the vessel. The broken edge opposite this feature changes to from a straight edge to a circular edge, cutting into the fragment. This edge appears to be accenuated with a circular groove around it. No other examples of either the notch or circular break have been found.
