Object type: DIE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Die made from copper alloy, probably dating to the medieval period. The die has six flat faces but is not a perfect cube. The numbering system is the same as on modern dice so that opposite sides add up to seven. Similar die have been found at Medieval York although these have a punched ring and dot for the numbers and the examples recorded in 'Finds from Medieval York' (Ottaway & Rogers) are made from jet and ivory. They date from 12th-mid 14th century.
The dice weighs 11.2g and measures 13.1mm x 11.9mm x 12.1mm.

A pierced copper alloy nummus of Maximian I, dating to c. AD 307 (Reece Period 15). Illegible reverse. Uncertain mint.
Because the coin was found in a hoard, it seems that the piercing took place in the Roman period.
