Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Isle of Anglesey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy ‘Trumpet Brooch’ with waist knob and cast relief decoration. The brooch was made in two pieces: traces of a hinged pin are evident on the reverse of the head, this pin was possibly made from iron. The brooch has the remains of a cast loop at the top of the head, and the distinctive flared end resembling a ‘trumpet’ although this does not have large swelling curves. The decoration consists of a waist-knob with transverse ridges above and below, and a stylised ox-head between the waist and head, with horns curving inwards on either side. Between the waist and t…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead seal matrix, which has been chip carved. The seal matrix is a flat, circular type, with the remains of a lug on the reverse. The matrix has been badly damaged by the plough and general wear in the soil. The finder reported that the matrix broke into two pieces as he carefully lifted it out of the ground. The lead is very friable and two small sections of the outer edge of the matrix are missing. The edges of the seal matrix have been damaged, so the legend is incomplete. It is impossible to see if the lug is pierced or unpierced. The lug has been positioned at roughly the …

A cast lead seal matrix, flat and circular, with an unpierced lug on the reverse. The edges of the seal matrix have been slightly damaged but most of the legend remains intact. The face depicts a basic flower with eight petals. Around the flower there is an inner circle. The legend appears to read (in Latin) * S' EMME REL-TE I[--'IS] (Seal of Emma, widow of...) The lug has been positioned at roughly the top of the matrix, but does not quite match up with the initial mark, which is a star; it is located at an 11 o' clock position (in relation to the lug). It helps to show the user…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman brooch of the Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, Midlands) of Mackreth 2011, CD PH 4.l type. The brooch is missing its spring mechanism and pin. At the head are the characteristic wing tip plate extensions, pierced to take the axis bar. This latter is now missing, although traces of orange corrosion product on the underside of the head suggest that it would have been made of iron. The rearward facing lug which protrudes from the centre of the head would have held the chord of the spring mechansim. The semi-cylindrical wings the…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Possibly Iron Age or Roman, otherwise undatable copper alloy ring 13.3mm in diameter (internal 6.5mm diameter) and weighing 1.50g. The ring is slightly diamond-shaped in section, and the central piercing is just off-centre. There appears to be a flattened rib running around the outside of the ring, suggesting an Iron Age or Roman date and in keeping with other similar (but larger) rings recorded from neighbouring parishes, and further afield. The ring may have been part of harness or a belt fitting, perhaps.
