Pewter pilgrim's ampulla. This elaborate example is a Canterbury souvenir relating to Thomas Becket and probably dating to circa 1170-1220. The ampulla is damaged (there is a hole near the base) and slightly bent out of shape. Areas of both sides are encrusted with corrosion or attached minerals, obscuring some of the detail of the decoration. However one side depicts an ecclesiastical figure (perhaps Becket?) above a quatrefoil design perhaps representing a flower. The very accomplished, so-called prototypes, of this series depict a different Becket miracle in each roundel of the …

Probably a contemporary copy of a 3rd-century copper-alloy Roman radiate of Tetricus I (c. 275 - c. 285 AD). Although the line between a 'good' copy and a 'bad' original is a fine one, it is suggested that this coin copies the 'Hilaritas' reverse illustrated in Reece and James (2000, 29; ref. 35).

Late early medieval tongue-shaped Ringerike or Winchester style strap end, late 10th-early 11th century. Sub-rectangular plate with two rivet holes containing the remains of copper alloy rivets at the short upper (proximal) edge. The majority of the obverse of the plate is covered with moulded relief foliate interlace decoration (either Ringerike or Winchester style). The plate tapers slightly then terminates in an undecorated expanded ovate extension (this is reminiscent of the crescentic extensions seen on the foot of some 6th-7th century Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooches, but there is…

The panel has unclear interlace decoration, and is broken across a central square or rectangular aperture. There are some traces of gilding on the obverse. Slightly bent backwards at the bend, but would have been flat originally. prboably c.7th-9th century. Length (b…

Cast copper alloy tweezers fragment, part of one arm only. Parallel sided arm, broken off before the fold. There are traces of a longitudinal faint narrow casting line down the centre of each of the surfaces of the arm. The expanded trapezoidal-shaped terminal is inwardly angled, and when complete, the terminals would have formed ‘pincers’ for plucking. Possibly Roman, more probably medieval or post medieval. Length 41.43mm, width at terminal 12.71mm, width across break 3.9mm, thickness of arm 1.4mm, thickness of terminal 0.9mm, weight 1.99g.
