Probably a contemporary copy of a 3rd-century copper-alloy Roman radiate of Tetricus I (c. 275 - c. 285 AD). Although the line between a 'good' copy and a 'bad' original is a fine one, it is suggested that this coin copies the 'Hilaritas' reverse illustrated in Reece and James (2000, 29; ref. 35).

Late early medieval tongue-shaped Ringerike or Winchester style strap end, late 10th-early 11th century. Sub-rectangular plate with two rivet holes containing the remains of copper alloy rivets at the short upper (proximal) edge. The majority of the obverse of the plate is covered with moulded relief foliate interlace decoration (either Ringerike or Winchester style). The plate tapers slightly then terminates in an undecorated expanded ovate extension (this is reminiscent of the crescentic extensions seen on the foot of some 6th-7th century Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooches, but there is…

Early medieval Anglo Saxon gilded copper alloy mount fragment. The flat-sectioned mount appears to have originally been sub-rectangular, with pointed terminals with outwardly curved sides. Cast copper alloy tweezers fragment, part of one arm only. Parallel sided arm, broken off before the fold. There are traces of a longitudinal faint narrow casting line down the centre of each of the surfaces of the arm. The expanded trapezoidal-shaped terminal is inwardly angled, and when complete, the terminals would have formed ‘pincers’ for plucking. Possibly Roman, more probably medieval or post medieval. Length 41.43mm, width at terminal 12.71mm, width across break 3.9mm, thickness of arm 1.4mm, thickness of terminal 0.9mm, weight 1.99g.

A Medieval copper alloy strap clasp with a decorative plate cast in the form of a fleur in place of one outside edge. The upper and lower sides of the frame are slightly convex and the other outside edge has a bar for attachment of a folded plate (now lost). The decorative plate is level with the top of the clasp, and the inner edge of this plate is in the form of a curving V shape. A narrow, slightly curved stem in the centre of the outside edge leads to a three-petalled fleur, with incised grooves defining the petals. Fragment of rectangular-sectioned copper alloy Roman bracelet. It is unclear whether it is broken at both ends as the decoration travels along the middle to both 'ends'. One break is obvious, the other has patinated over, if it is indeed a break. At the clear break the fragment is 5.5mm wide, at the other it is 5.3mm wide. The fragment measures 30.2mm, is 1.8mm thick and weighs 2.10g. It is curving slightly in profile but is rather out-of-shape. The decoration takes the form of a central rib within a groove. The rib has tiny equidistant horizontal cuts to give the impression of l…

Part of a copper alloy book clasp. The clasp was made from a single flat rectangular strip of copper alloy folded over and riveted together. The fold has broken, leaving two riveted strips. The upper, slightly wider strip terminates in an expanded end, with a scrolling edge split into two parts by a V-shaped notch. Each of these parts has a stamped dot and circle motif (now barely visible) with a central motif above. This upper strip has a narrower curved strip forming the fold one end, now broken. The lower strip is a plain rectangle with expanded end, shorter than the upper strip. It…
