A new nineteenth-century gunflint production site has been discovered. platform gunflints were produced in Brandon and Icklingham, Suffolk, for the British army from the late eighteenth-century. Certainly these were the main production sites between about 1800 and 1850. Other than at these sites there was very little production, due to the specialised nature of gunflint manufacture, so finding a large group of gunflint production waste at Freckenham is important. This new production site was indicated by the discovery of several hundred fragments of manufacturing waste as well as finis…

County: Essex
Workflow stage: Published
Cast copper alloy object, probably a Bronze Age awl. The awl is essentially a shaft; rectangular in section, with a swelling approximately two thirds along its length, which gives it an elongated, flattened lentoid shape in plan and profile. The longer end of the awl, before the swelling, tapers to a semi-sharp point, whilst the other, shorter portion terminates with a broad blunt point. The original surface survives only in small patches with an even mid green patina, whilst exposed surfaces (the majority of the object) are a brighter green. The tool is 37.82mm long, 3.24mm wide and 3…

Small irregular piece of flint debitage, probably dating to the Earlier Neolithic period. (3500-2700 BC). The piece of flint is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and profile. There are no areas of cortex present – this suggests that the waste comes from the tertiary (or final phase) of tool making. This is substantiated by the large amount of flaking on dorsal face, when compared to the ventral. The ventral face has a distinct bulb of percussion. The dorsal face has at least eight scars on it, from at least three different directions. This would suggest that this flake was produced tow…
