Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worn and incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval double-looped buckle frame. The pin bar extends beyond the edges in pointed lobes; the pin has been lost. Considerable orange corrosion product at the centre of the pin bar suggests an iron composition for the pin. The reverse of the buckle is flat, and the frame slightly bevelled internally and externally. The upper face is decorated on each outer edge by a five-petalled rosette with three outer petals and two inner. This buckle has been bent in profile and had one of its loops squashed as a result of old damage. Such buckles tend …

Eleven sherds of abraded hand made south western gritty greyware of second to fourth century AD date. The sample comprises five rim sherds and six body sherds. Three of the rims are everted and the other two have external thumbed impressions below the rim. The gritty fabric contains various inclusions including flint and quartz pieces, some of which are quite large (up to 3-4mm) and angular and pieces of a sparkly rock, which is possibly permian lava. Some of the quartz pieces are rounded and white in colour. The sherds have reduced cores but some have one or more oxidised surfaces. Th…

A complete cast copper alloy double loop trapezoidal shaped buckle, with elaborately moulded decorations on the loops. The frame has trefoil shaped ends, formed of three lobes on each side. The central lobe is more pointed, there is an incised pin recess on both of the central lobes. The strap bar also terminates with rounded knops. The reverse of the buckle is flat. The copper alloy pin is missing. The metal has lost most of its original surface and the metal is a mid greenish-grey colour and is pitted. This type of buckle dates from circa 1620 – 1680. Copper alloy 'four lis in a lozenge' type jetton. This example is the second generation of this type of jetton (the first generation is slightly more medieval in character and the legend reads something that makes sense, like 'VIVE LE ROI'). However this example dates 1500-1520 and the legends are entirely nonsensical with lettering that is more 'Roman' and less gothic. The place of production is Tournai. The Jetton is bent at a right angle and measures 27.1mmin diameter, 0.88mm in thickness and weighs 2.47g.

32 sherds of abraded hand made greyware of first, second or early third century AD date. The sample comprises nine rim sherds, two base sherds and 23 body sherds. Four of the rims are everted, two are plain, one is hooked, one has an external bead and one has a bead with two cordons below. The fabrics vary somewhat, but they are all sandy (fine to coarse) with some mica. Most are reduced, although some have oxidised surfaces and two are oxidised with reduced surfaces. This coarse greyware pottery cannot be closely sourced but was probably locally made at several locations. Total wei…
