Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Devon

Two rim sherds from unglazed hand made cooking vessels of early medieval to medieval date. The wide-mouthed rim sherds are quite chunky, suggesting that they fall earlier in the usual date range for this coarse locally made pottery. The gritty earthenware fabric is tempered with Upper Greensand-derived angular chert and flint (up to 2-3mm), rounded quartz, red mudstone and limestone (up to 1mm). Both sherds have oxidised orange surfaces and a reduced grey core. Total weight: 49.22g
