A large cast copper-alloy circular trade weight of post-medieval date. The weight has a circular rim, 5.5mm thick, a central punched hole and a concentric incised circle between the two. The reverse features a number of circular grooves. The upper face is stamped with a 'C' surmounted by a crude crown, the sword of St Paul (for the City of London), and an 'A' (for avoirdupois) clustered around 12 o'clock. At 6 o'clock is a ewer (for the Founder's Company, maker of weights). The 'C' denotes either Charles I or Charles II; Read (1995, 158) notes that in the reign of Charles II the 'A…

Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Several lead-alloy weights of different sizes and shapes (see attached picture). They were all found in the same corner of a field, but did not form part of a hoard. They almost certainly date from different periods from Late Roman to the Medieval Ages, were home-made and may have been used as spindle whorls, net sinkers, gaming pieces weights for traps or as part of weighing equipment. It is difficult to attribute an exact date to the individual weights. Many thanks to the finders for supplying the attached picture.

A short cast copper-alloy flanged axe with high, triangular-shaped flanges and no stop ridge. The side view shows that the flanges almost form a diamond in plan. The sides are parallel and the blade is moderately splayed. From the image supplied by the finder alone, signs of wear or re-sharpening marks are difficult to distinguish, but the uncurved/unworked flanges may suggest that, in fact, it had not received a haft and was never used. This short flanged axe is was probably part of the Taunton metalwork assemblage dating from approximately 1400-1300BC Many thanks to the finder…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Early Bronze Age flat axe, made from cast cu-alloy. As far as can be determined from the picture, the axe is plain on both sides, has a narrow butt and a widely splayed cutting edge. If there are signs of wear or re-sharpening marks, we cannot see them on the images; they may be very faint. This axe is part of the Brithdir metalwork assemblage and dates from ca. 2150-2000BC Unfortunately, we do not have any measurements for the axe, but many thanks to the finder for supplying the images attached to this entry.

Lead trade weight with the figure '1' imprinted on the obverse, probably indicating the weight. Since it was made from lead and does not show any 'offical markings' like a crown or the coat of arms of London, it is probably weight used by a trader or farmer (?). One could imagine that it was part of a set of several weights, the others weighing 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 2/1 etc. Like the more common brass or cu-alloy alloy weights of this type, they could have been stored in a stack, a smaller weight fitting into the rim of the next heavier one.

Unidentified object, probably a bag or sack seal or a customs badge? It was cast from lead and is tulip/harp-shaped. While the reverse is plain, the obverse is separated by five horizontal grooves into six almost equally-sized fields. The decoration/writing reads: 1: cross (?), 2. small zigzag pattern, 3. R.F, 4. large zigzag pattern, 5. 19, 6. S+F or S+T. The '19' is printed in a different script and may have been added later, e.g. as a customs or sales mark(?).
