Object type: HARNESS FITTING
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Central Bedfordshire

A heavily worn and corroded copper-alloy harness junction of late Anglo-Saxon date. A similar three-way harness junction has been found in a mid 11th-century context at New Fresh Wharf, London (see F. Pritchard; 1991; pp. 147-9) and a very close parallel was found at Osbournby, Lincs., still with a 'socketed hook' strap-fitting attached (LIN-F29FC4). Another example with similar engraved decoration can be found at NMS-7E8916. The piece is sub-circular, domed and has three irregularly-shaped holes, two of which are missing their outer edges. The space between these holes contains trace…

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast lead decorated spindle whorl. The upper surface of the whorl is decorated with raised pellets, chevrons and lines radiating from the central perforation to the outer edge. Areas of the surface have eroded away and the edge is worn in places. The underside of the spindle whorl is missing, and it is difficult to make out any decoration, but it looks as if the whorl may have been plano-convex originally, rather than biconical which is more typical of this style of whorl. These weights, usually thought to be spindle whorls, are common finds in other regions of the countr…

Cast copper alloy open-top thimble or sewing ring with four horizontal and concentric lines of large triangular indentations defined by a line above and below, which act as borders. Read (1988) illustrates a similar example on page 76, No.434, which is dated to the 15th century.

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint discoidal scraper, circular in plan and semi-circular in profile and section. The distal end and lateral margins have been unifacially retouched on the dorsal face. There is no evidence of cortex on the surface, suggesting that this is a tertiary flake. The ventral face preserves the smooth conchoidal fractures rippling away from the snapped off bulb of percussion at the proximal end. The flint is a mottled dark and light grey colour, probably made from a local beach pebble. The length to breadth ratio is almost 1:1. Bond illustrates a similar discoidal scraper on page 56,…

Object type: BELL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy crotal bell with the ‘sunburst’ pattern decorating the upper and lower parts of this spherical-shaped bell. Within each sunburst is an moulded line, like a ray. There is a central raised rib which divides the upper and lower halves of the bell. On the upper half of the bell, there are two circular sound holes on either side of the suspension loop, which is made up of a circular opening within a square. On the lower half of the bell, there are two circular holes, connected by a slit which runs perpendicular to the central rib, along the circumference of the bell un…
