County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval copper alloy oval frame buckle with composite rigid plates. The frame, pin and plates are all of a different copper alloy composition. The frame has a lip which extends across the outside edge at a slant, presumably to hold the wire pin above it. The sheet plate is held in place with one rivet (in situ) at the middle of the open end - although techincally the opposite end is also open, behind the pin where the top plate abutts to the slight ridge in the forked spacer directly behind the oval frame. The top plate is cut at a slight angle and looks crude. The 'rivet' end of t…

Medieval copper alloy strap clasp, the frame of which is significantly larger (wider and longer) than the attached plate. The frame is rather worn and may have had pairs of transverse ridges, on at each end of the long sides. However, there is no sign of them now. The frame measures c.15mm in length and is wider at the rotating end, 12mm compared to 9.8mm at the plate-end. The rotating end is 10mm in length and as wide as the interneal dimensions of the frame (c.10mm). It is topped with a bar mount with faceted edges. Cast copper alloy open-work mount, probably Roman. The mount is circular in plan and domed in section. It has a moulded rim around the edge of the mount and double incised lines to the centre and top of the mount, which create a circle of 10.66mm in diameter. The mount has four piercings set around the incised central circle. These take the form of two pairs of convergent comma shapes, set opposite each other. Otherwise the mount is plain. The reverse of the mount is also plain. The method of attachment is obscured by bright green corrosion product, but was likely to be a circular sec…

A perforated sub-circular object bearing incised decoration on one side. This dress fastening was cast in one piece with two iron rivets visible on the outer surface of the plate.
