Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy composite strap end fragment.
The surviving part is formed from a plate of cast copper alloy. The fragment is the top plate of the strap end; the back plate and the forked spacer are missing. The main body of this fragment is crescent shaped, cast integrally to a tri-lobed leaf-shaped terminal. Two copper alloy rivets can be seen on the obverse surface of the plate, on the arch of the crescent (nearest to the leaf-shaped attachment). The veins of the leaf have been depicted on the obverse surface and some other designs are present but these are largely indeciphera…

Object type: FIGURINE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy figurine, in the shape of a bird. The figurine appears to have broken off from a much larger object as a stump of copper alloy projects from the upside of the bird’s stomach. It is possibly that this bird was positioned on the end of something like a shaft as a decorative terminal. Therefore a Roman date seems plausible.
The birds itself looks like a dove. It has its wings out stretched – the wing span measures 44.64mm. From head to tail the bird measures 46.8mm. Feather detail can be seen on the bird’s wings and tail and two engraved rings indicate the eyes…

A lead cloth seal; two discs of lead with a folded lug connecting the two. One disc is undecorated. The other comprises a second plate of lead which has been pressed into the centre of the disc. Extending out from this central plate are the flattened remains of the integral rivet extending from the first disc; this has started to lift up from the surface. There is some corroded lead and soil between the two discs. The lead has gone a light whitish-grey colour. Seals like this date to the medieval to early post-medieval periods.

A large cast lead bag seal or cloth seal. The seal comprises two discs of lead with a folded lug connecting the two. The lug has now largely broken off, leaving a stump in situ.
The obverse disc depicts the letters A and B with a sword between then. The letters XX are depicted on a second line. A B // XX . A lead rivet head can be seen on this surface; it is squashed and flattened against the obverse surface, filling most of the disc.
The reverse of the seal, has been made from a plate of lead, with three rivet holes and three corresponding rivets. This plate is badly damaged and …

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN

Roman silver coiled finger-ring terminating at one end in a snake head. It has three full coils and two half-coils (for the head and tail). It is slightly squashed so coil 3 is pushed under coil 2. The finger-ring stands 15.3mm high and is 24mm in diameter (internal 19.7mm). It weighs 16.06g. The first coil (behind the head) is especially chunky at 2.8mm thick. The tail (fifth coil) is only 1.8mm thick. The first coil has five equidistant grooves around it, behind the head, presumably decorative. The head itself is diamond-shaped, extending at one point into the hoop instead. It has o…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A slightly corroded copper-alloy fragment, which probably represents part of an annular brooch of 13th to 15th century date.
It is probable that just under half of the original brooch remains and that original object would have been sub-circular. The outer ring has three protrusions, each of which is divided into three segments, giving the impression of wings. The central void of the brooch would originally have been formed of three joined circular holes - one at the top and two at the bottom - but now only one and a half remain. The reverse of the piece is flat and plain.
It mea…

Medieval silver gilt annular brooch comprised of seven 'lobes'. Much of the gilding is now missing. It measures 13.4mm in diameter (internal 10.4mm) and weighs 0.73g. The pin, which is flat on the underside but slightly faceted on the other side (flattened mid-rib and sloping sides), makes a complete loop around the centre of one 'lobe' of the frame. The join is not immediately visible but is secured on the underside. A slight horizontal ridge is visible just beneath the loop but does not extend beyond the max width of the pin, here 2.7mm. It narrows over 14.2mm and rests between the …
