Object type: BELL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete but crudely made cast copper alloy crotal bell. The bell is divided into two hemispheres by a prominent ridge which runs around the centre of the bell. The upper hemisphere is undecorated with two large sound holes (one is mis-cast and larger than the other). A crude, irregular shaped square loop extends up from the top of the upper hemisphere. Object type: SPOON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
The bowl and part of a stem from possibly a pewter spoon. The spoon stem and handle were probably cast. The stem is flat and rectangular in section and the edges are chamfered. There is a slight swelling in the stem just before the bowl. The stem is broken so it is not possible to say how long it once would have been, the break is well worn. The bowl is roughly oval in shape and is shallow. The reverse of the stem has a ridge running down its spine. The reverse of the bowl is undecorated. This spoon is probably late 17th – 19th century in date.

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment or part of a possible lead form for the manufacture of a Roman bow brooch. This form probably dates from the early Roman period contemporary with the style of brooch (50-200 AD). The object is broadly sub triangular in plan and fairly similar to the upper part (bow and head) of a two piece Colchester derivative bow brooch. The artefact has been badly abraded in the soil and is therefore incomplete and the edges are rounded. The wings are semi-cylindrical however the wing caps are not present. The bow of the brooch form is humplike and the bow terminates in a abraded point. Th…

Incomplete copper alloy two-piece Colchester derivative (Polden Hill) bow brooch of Roman date (43-150AD). The wings are incomplete and were probably semi-cylindrical. The wing caps are incomplete and the axis bar, spring and pin are missing. The spring would have been attached to a rearward facing hook. The bow head of the brooch is hump-like, and slightly angular. The bow is semi-circular (D-Shaped) in cross section. …

A cast copper alloy fragment from a much larger object. The object is largely unidentifiable.
